I started marking where to keep the dial on my space heater and burner. Makes it way easier.

I'm lucky, my 15-16 psi is exactly at 6 o clock on the dial on the hob I use.

I have electric. When I run agar or lc, it is set to 4. If its got 10 qts of Millet, its set at 4 1/2. I just noticed that what's inside makes a difference on mine.

When I stuff my presto 23 with four huge bags, I have to constantly turn the heat down over 2 hours before it comes to a resting place, when the bags are hot throughout. I like having an alarm tell me when its creeping north of 18psi.

Few questions on my second grow:
Using the BFR PF tek - how do I prevent premature pinning? My last grow, I got pins when the jars were about 95% colonized.
Where should I store the inoculated jars? Can I put them in a dark closet for 3 weeks? Will they need fresh air?

Define 95%. Pins will develop in the presence of a contamination or if the cake is fully consolidated Sometimes with cakes 95% looks like 95% if the uncolonized area is at the top because of the dry vermiculite barrier. Sometimes it is because the Jar is to big, we do see it a lot when people use larger than 1/2 pint jars. If it is at the bottom and your seeing pinning than it probably has a bacterial contamination in the uncolonized area. I would say to birth them and dunk and roll and knock off the uncolonized area and hope for the best.

95% colonized with mycelium. For that grow, I removed the pins and birthed the cakes and don’t think I had any contamination. For this next grow, I’m trying to prevent the pinning until the cakes are 100% fully colonized and solidified.

I’m using the regular size 1/2 pint jars as I couldn’t get the short ones.

if jars are pinning you're either leaving them way too long or something is going south with them. if they aren't fully colonized my guess would be contams. i don't do pf tek anymore, but when i did i used the normal half pints & it went fine

1/2 pint is the recommended size. Probably just bacteria in the Syringe. All you can do with out agar and LC is just hope for the best and keep knocking up jars.

If it’s the tall 1/2 pints.. it happens often. Do what you can to get inoculate all the way to the bottom of the jars
Could be a contam but it happens with clean inoculate too with the taller jars if the growth doesn’t start along the whole length of the jar at the inoc points

Regular mouth half pints are a poor choice because the tall jar allows for gravity to compress the substrate over time at the bottom. This causes the last bit at the bottom to stall regardless of the presence of bacteria.

Anyone use pour spouts for LI or LC?
Not sure if I should go for the plastic blender type lids or the stainless steel oil/vinegar spout lids that fit mason jars.

eatyualive uses both of those in this thread https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26425408#26425408
I can't remember if he came to a conclusion about which he preferred but there is definitely good info there on both the plastic sipping/straw ones with the hole and the olive oil spout style lids.
Personally I just pour all my liquid inoculate directly from mason jars. I tried using the plastic sip/drink lids but found mycelium to get caught up on it quite easily, coagulating around the opening and becoming a possible vector for contams

Yeah that's where I first read about it--just wondering if anyone's had any personal experience with them. I was leaning more towards the olive oil spout lids just cause it seems a little easier, not sure if it would have the same issues you had. Thanks for the response.

Those oil type pour spouts leave much to be desired. The plastic ones like i recommend in the end of the thread are nice. Thats what I use. Theyre not PP5 but they dont melt.
I ubscrew the lids on 20 jars then pour em all consecutively. Myc getting caught on the lip isnt an issue. It gets poured out less than a second later
