Would a pint of grain finish colonizing sooner then a quart via A2G? Or would it really only be a matter of a day with the right shaking?

Depends on how much grain you give to slave from master jar.

No I mean, dropping a wedge to a pint vs a quart. Which is going to be 100% colonized 1st?
I haven't seen the king There's been some king oyster posts

what makes you say they look contaminated? i don’t doubt you as i’m really shit at spotting bacteria in my jars if it’s not glaringly obvious but the other jars just looked good to me
also not saying they aren’t contaminated still, but the mostly uncolonized jar has been chugging along with colonization now that i can see where the wedge is. if the bacteria was preventing it before wouldn’t it just not have colonized at all if that were the case?

I wud imagine the lesser area wud be colonized first. But i suppose they wud have to be the same grain and culture as well.
Oh. King is some gourmet fungus eh?

Dang, I was just reading your shoebox thread wherein you said you you usually did 1:1, 1:2 rarely, and that your only foray into 1:3 triched out. What made you change your thinking on this? Thanks

Would you ever mist during colonization if theoretically your sub lost too much water through evap and mycelium heat?

That’d have to be a long colonization. I think it would be better to pour a little water down the side and then drain any extra after an hour in that situation.
(Shitty)King oyster

It makes zero sense but I haven’t noticed much difference in jar colonization time regardless of size or wedges used. One time I put two whole plates in a quart and it was only a couple days quicker.

Alright I see. I fucked with some bacterial spawn and now I am paying the price. It colonizes the Hpoo so sloooow... but at least it's not stalled.
It's either that or the store bought Hpoo has been sterilized I will know soon about the latter

Ive been thinking lately of adding smaller wedges to grains and saving more of the culture in the petri.

I uzed to jst tictactoe a plate and dump it in a spawn jar. Actually two plates to each jar. But that led to major bacterial contam for me. 100mm plates too big. Plus when i do that the agar edge flops out and half of it smacks the side of the jar while the rest pulls it in, real quick like. Fuckinv up my spawn man.

I have 10 shoeboxes of sub standard spawn running at the moment, (bad grain prep, jars bacterial). A couple have started pinning before the sub is fully colonised. Is this likely mushrooms trying to survive before contams take over?
In general is pinning before full colonisation a sign of contamination? I know it could be bad surface conditions also.
I'm only letting them continue as I have nothing else ready to go yet. In the meantime I'm attending p9s clean spawn school whilst I get my cultures ready to go to grain.

You’ll definitely get to harvest with that one. Might be a spot of mold somewhere towards the end but it looks far enough along that it’ll be fine.
I’d bet on mold showing either right before or after the flush is done.

Thanks AKA, yeah I'm also letting them go to learn how bad spawn grows out and hopefully learn some bad smells and other telltale signs along the way. I have no expectation to harvest much and will chuck them as soon as I see green or anything nasty looking. In fact I probably will after the first flush regardless.
In general, if you use a coir top layer and everything is healthy should it fully colonise before pinning? In dumb terms, should it be fully white before you see any pins?

Yeah I’ve run every jar that colonized 100% no matter how bacterial, and only one molded before fruiting. Definitely will help you pick up on problems in the future.
How colonized the surface gets depends on genetics. I’ve had some solid white and some where only knots poked through the surface.

I just looked at your journals and old threads to get some tips and you've only been doing this just over a year?!? Wow.
Looks like you dived in head first and never looked back. Hopefully my journey will be similar.
That lions mane in your signature looks amazing. I started planning to grow it then realised I was getting carried away and have put it on back burner til I'm comfortable with cubes.

lol thanks. Yeah I was lucky to be able to basically have unlimited free time for like 9 months when I started. Only planned on getting a few ounces and that would be it, but here we are.
Lions mane is super easy, definitely a good place to start branching out.
