Hi everybody
Not sure if this is the right thread to post in, please let me know if there is a better one.
I have prepped some whole oats using BODS tek. I'm planning on inoculating them with agar. If all is done well, should there be leftover oat hulls in the jar? If there are hulls, will this affect the mycelium in any negative way? I boiled them for around 30min, but I have an inkling that wasn't long enough. Attached is one of my most recent oat jars, post PC.
Thanks, apologies if this is a dumb question.

You can tell how hydrated your oats are by removing the hull and cutting the grain in half, if its white in the middle its not done yet. Those oats look like they may be overdone, overdone is better than under cooked.
Sloughed off hulls won't affect anything, it's all food to mycelium. If your hulls are readily falling off it's an indication that they've been over cooked and mushy. Shouldn't pose much of a problem if you have clean spawn.

If you overcook your oats during prep then let them dry out more than usual to achieve a shakeable mass post-PC.

I find that oats require a lot of sitting around before loading, one of the many reasons I dislike oats.

Proper screens and some fans would really speed up the process. Gonna build a couple 4x4 screens tomorrow. I wanna crush a 50lb bag in a day
Oats are the only guaranteed cereal available at the feed store any given day. They're also cheapest. Whatever works

Yup. If I'm going to boil grain I like wheat. We all have our preferences though, some people swear by oats, I used it for a good while until I got fed up with it.
I don't like boiling any grain anymore though.

I've just been using Eat's no boil oat soak tek. I haven't had any problems at all. The oats I get are cheap as hell too. Costs like 15 bucks for 50 pounds.

Eats eazy boiling soak oat prep eh? Well I still figure I need a screen to ensure my grains are properly dry to the touch or simply not overhydrated should something go awry, but I'm gonna try doing a hot soak in the morning. I figure Ill use a bunch of buckets 1/3 full of oats each and the boil water in the my largest pots. Each bucket gets topped off with hot water and soaks for like 45min. Then strained and spread to air dry and cool before bagging. Makes it sound like prepping 50lb would be a breeze should the consistency come out comparable.

Thanks for the replies everyone.
I spread the oats out on paper towel and let them dry as much as I could, so I'm hopeful that their moisture is about right.
No water pooled at the bottom of the jars and all 4 of them are still shake nicely.
As Modular guessed the jar is on it's side haha

for LC does it matter if you use an agar wedge from germinated spores that has food coloring in it? (added in the agar)

Food coloring will have zero effect on LC. What matters is that it is completely unquestionably a clean culture.

Rinse the oats really well to get any dirt out, it wont hurt, I just like clean grains.
Pressure Cook the oats until the lock on your PC sets. (Using an old Presto)
The I kill the heat and screen drain them.
I do not rinse the oats at that point and instead spread out evenly on the screen to steam dry. The steam will wick outside moisture off without drying the inside of the grain. Usually about 1 Hr on the steam tray or table will do. If you grab a handful and some stick to your hand they are not dry.
Load and PC. I get perfect Oats every time.

Lol I thought I was the only one pressure hydrating grains, that's all I've been doing lately.
I put it in a bucket filled with water (don't wanna make a mess in the PC), let the PC vent for +20 minutes so the bucket has time to get hot and then run the PC for 50 minutes at 20-25 psi... yup.
Wait for the gauge to hit zero and then I rinse the shit out of the barley until the water runs clear. It's that or getting slow ass growth from so much starch. Let it dry on a big screen strainer for 24 hours, jar up and pc.
The grains come out looking surprisingly good considering the amount of time they've been at temperatures well passed the boiling point (50 minutes at high pressure plus a long cool down). Most of them come out with the cores very exposed but I'm actually liking this a lot if I dry them well. Plain boiling for that long would turn the grain to shit, good thing the pressure inside the PC doesn't allow water to boil, so it doesn't damage the grains nearly as much. Barley is a very tough grain, though.

Thats cool, I like the idea of doing it inside of a bucket. I have 2 PC's one for grains and one for Sterilizing Jars and Tools.
