Reading through some of the new much cult threads and one of them (impulse sealer) got me thinking..... I have nichrome wire, a few arduino/raspberry pi boards and some time. How difficult would it be to throw together an impulse sealer? gonna do so digging and find out first why good impulse sealers are as pricey as they are and then start looking of components and parts lists. With a little bit of logic you can make a sealer that reads thickness of bag and adjusts temp and time accordingly, complete with RGB LEDs and blue tooth speaker if you wanted.

I wouldnβt want to fuck around with a DIY sealer. I just upgraded my 2mm AIM manual sealer to a 5mm AIM with a magnetic lock. Now that was worth the extra cash, I wouldnβt settle for anything less now.

Not that I question your call but I'm curious why you say you wouldn't want to? Just reliability concerns or something more specific about the design or construction difficulties of it?

I dunno what your capabilities are, maybe youβre a crazy engineer with serious fabrication skills. It can happen. But would you want to risk a run of bags on a sealer you were not π― on? I wouldnβt. With my cheap sealer (which was still AIE and actually not cheap, more like less expensive) it risked pinholes or incomplete seals. It definitely couldnβt deal with folded gussets without risk of melting through in some parts while not dealing in others. The mag lock is definitely sweet, wouldnβt want to deal without one now.
To me itβs about the same as βcars are expensive, wouldnβt it just be cheaper to build one from scratch myself?β Sure, but while youβre over there building the car, I want to be out driving it.

Right on. All of that is a fair assessment. I certainly am not going to build a car for fun. Smaller projects though, absolutely a large part of the fun is building it. And right now the only working sealer I have is a vac sealer, so basically I don't have a sealer...... Definitely going to do some digging. I'm curious where the price goes up in them. That is, is it the components or the manufacturing, or the aftermarket service/reliability that drives the price up on the nicer models. See how feasible it is. If not, I'll use the nichrome for a diy hydro heater, or a telescope dew sheild. ha I never run out of projects.....

Can someone help me out? I've been struggling with my grains, over/under hydrated. Fine for cubes, but my pans are hating it. So I've changed up to straight wheat, this is my first time using it. I was advised to soak and simmer with wheat but having soaked I think they look good. Can I get a second opinion?

The ones on the right are bone dry, in case anyone thinks they came from the same soak

I find wheat needs a hard boil. Bust open one of those grains and if the core is white (looks like it from outside) then it isnt fully hydrated.
Just gonna leave this heree https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26326713

Now that is a write up, and the pics of the opened grains and what indicators to look for are beyond value.
Thank you for this. Legend!

That thread is how I learned real well, I have been documenting how I prep grains and plan to do a small write up on prepping my favorites like rye, wheat, and oats.

I was just hard boiling the wbs I had Which was mainly wheat but it had a lot of cracked corn and other shit. The cubes never particularly minded but I tried pans, oyster and an agrocybe on it recently with less than ideal results. That write-up, especially the bit about what the inside should look like is pure class tho. So helpful. Kinda wanna try oats but 1 thing at a time.

Hey all I'm gonna run a few non organic pseudo casing layers to be applied at the time of spawning. I started off pondering something with practical implications and my mind wandered into this idea.(Original idea will be shared soon) THIS IS ONLY FOR PICTURES! It will take me a likl while to do all of these cause i'm not Mr. money bags. I already bought a bunch of stuff and will continue to do so. These are a bunch I thought of. I would love to hear your thoughts, suggestions and criticisms before the first tubs are made and I make a picture post.
Artificial flowers Carbon pellets Marbles pie weights/ BBs Mother fuckin Orbeez Pom Poms
Pine needles Cedar mulch Seaweed sheets Reptile Terrarium Liner (shitty green liner) Biodegradable Chunky Glitter 2 coins Finished puzzle Tiny spools of yarn gherkin pickles Things to consider will be adding at the time of spawning/ after colonization. Add soaked to field capacity(if possible) or added dry/ added dry and misted.
Add isos that need testing because if they do well with abuse they will do better with out it Or do it with Known Isos to see how detrimental if at all to the yield.
