yeah that sounds about right. no more than a cm or 2 is needed. Not that bigger is inherently a bad thing. Bigger wedges just mean higher possibility of contams being present.

I transfer much smaller than 1 cm, that's huge.

I think you meant mm not cm. A 2cm chunk is pretty dang big.

A while back Caps was being super kind and helping me dial my tubs. At one point he mentioned that under the right conditions, sometimes a bit more air can actually make the surface wetter. I'm having that situation very clearly happen to me right now. Just goes to show, this is a somewhat complex thing we are all doing.

My transfers are often about the size of a pins head, unless I fuck it up.

Thought at first it was knots but then... eh. Kinda praying its some weird mycelial reaction to bacteria or hypertrophy from too high grain ratio, whatever.

For anyone that might care, it was trich.

Now im trying to understand how it got there. I suspect the spawn was a bit bacterial but... it was fully colonized. The PC cycle ran for 1:30 hr and at first it colonized well, rhizo growth. After the first break of the spawn it recolonized relatively fast but some grain had a "stuck-to the glass-look". Albeit fully colonized. The sus grains were few, nothing big and freaky looking but still there. Come spawning day, mixed 2.25 quarts grain to CVG which was heat treated and left to cool. Colonization took 8 days and then 6 days later, trich popped up.

Im honestly at a loss how it happened. I know pre flush 1 contams means bad spawn. However it was fully colonized. For GE, I used 4 layers of ironed polyfill, i suspect that but the other jars had those as filters too and didnt have any issues.

More FAE can often kickstart the cultures metabolism, increasing the temps it puts out. The temp spike leads to a drop in dew point and the surface ends up with more condensation forming.

Fully colonized spawn doesn't mean it's clean or impervious to a future mold contamination after spawning if it's weakened by bateria. You even said there was some wet spot in your jars and that can perfectly be caused by bacteria.

What was the point of doing a pc run of just 1,5 hours anyway? You can't cut corners there, saving half an hour here to have your grow contaminated later doesn't sound like a good plan.

I think your problem was an insufficient cycle. Myc can look great in the beginning when you inoculate grain that wasn't correctly sterilized. It's only later on that you start to see the funk.

:whathesaid:

This is the most frustrating of contamination scenarios, especially with PE(due to the ungodly wait just for it to go to shit in the end). Everything looks awesome up until the very last second, and then it strikes.

Thats what I was guessing was happening. But I gotta tell ya... over the years of dialing in tubs (poorly I might add) this little quirk has tricked me into going further from ideal tub dialing.

If you’re going to do that the FAE spike needs to be well timed. Otherwise you just dry everything out instead. Works best with really aggressive colonizing cultures, need some speed.

Wasnt even aware that up to 2 hrs are needed. I read up SBJ's tek and thats what i did lol.
Honestly, Ill just go for 2 hrs then. Might need to improve filters for GE too. What do you use regarding GE?

I use poly for sauce type jars and whole SFD for 2 pieces jars. Poly is great and can take a lot of cycles before going bad.

I personally wouldn't go no less than 2,5 hours per PC run for grain spawn, you have a lot of leeway before the grains start to get a bit burnt/toasted (which will slow growth).

Acknowledged, thanks.
I dont think they will go toast unless water runs out. Now that i think of it, 2.5 hrs will dry them up, wont they? Dont want that to happen, they then would have to be prepd with more water in them

I like 2 hours with jars, 3.5 with bags if the unit isn’t jammed, and a full 4 hours if I crammed the bags in.

Nah you can't dry shit up in a PC saturated with moisture. You can get the grains browner than you'd want by going too long tho, which happens to have the same effect on growth than dry grains, it will slow things down.
