I just started 5 jars using the PF Tek. It's my first grow and am trying to be as meticulous as possible.

I'm sterilizing the jars tonight via indirect boiling in a pot. I'll leave them overnight to cool down.

Tomorrow, I'll inoculate the jars with spore syringes. My questions:

Once I inoculate the jars, where do I store them?

The temperature in my house is around 65 degrees (FH). Is this too cool?

Do I need to use an incubator box?

Store on a shelf at room temp, low 70s, no need to incubate. 65 may be a touch slow but no big deal.

Anyone who grows PEU, are they as finicky about casing as regular PE, running it for the first time soon. If I can get away with just a top layer that would be swell.

As real as most complaints

Placed out a vinegar trap
Wish me luck

Peppermint oil will be your savior. You can add it to your mist water and spray your tubs with it.
Peppermint oil will kill the juvinile larvae, ive tested this with great success.
For a bad infection you may need to literally soak your substrate in watered down peppermint oil.
Trust me on this. I fuckin' hate fungus gnats.

Don't soak your fucking substrate in peppermint oil for the love of god.
Peppermint oil to kill larvae? No.
:blowmybrainsout:

No.

If you want to actually kill the larvae then use Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis bacteria. It's actually a larvicide designed to kill two things. Mosquito larvae and fungus gnat larvae. I used it to rectify a gnat infestation far worse than most here have ever posted.

Thousands, upon thousands of them in a home that was juggling 40+ monotubs.
BTI bacteria is sold in many forms, Mosquito Dunks, Skeeter Bitz etc.
This is what I use,

Peppermint oil is a stop-gap solution and will only drive them to feed and breed elsewhere. Trust me I took advice like this and made this mistake.
Use BTI to kill larvae, use pyrethrin insecticide to kill adults (Don't use around cats or fish) Plenty of products that use pyrethrin on the market, it's derived from chrysanthemum flowers.

When I stopped listening to Shroomery people about vinegar bowls, sticky strips and other shit and looked at what pest control/mushroom farmers did I finally rid myself of those cocksuckers. Don't cut corners with those mold spreading fucks. BTI and pyrethrin based insecticides.

I'm not saying soak it in straight peppermint oil, water it down obviously, so literal...
Thing is that it does work, I've never had to use any other method.
I see a fungus gnat and I spray diluted peppermint oil in that tub and gone.
Big infections I've bottom watered tubs with diluted peppermint oil and they go away within the week.
Catch the adults on a sticky pad and you're good.

Peppermint oil watered down makes absolutely no sense because it's not a proven larvicide. BTI in a mist has nearly no effect on mycelium and it's known to work and has been used by Shroomery members in the past to good effect. Just use the search function for "Mosquito dunks" or otherwise. There's no reason to do some essential oil holistic approach to a solved problem.

Catching the adults on sticky pads is the same parroted shit that had me fighting with them so long. Pregnant females do NOT give a fuck about sticky traps and are scientifically proven to be attracted to mycelium, more so to green mold mycelium. Specifically trichoderma. Sticky traps are only used in commercial cultivation to gauge the level of an outbreak, not as a remedy. A pregnant female will NOT go towards a sticky trap, vinegar bowl or otherwise. As Penn State proved the fungus gnats sense of smell is so adept it could pick out a sizzling steak in a barn full of manure.

Dunking with peppermint oil is silly, it's not a proven methodology when we fucking have BTI. We have a legit 100% foolproof larvicide made from bacteria and it does NOT affect the mycelium so why would you throw essential oils into the mix which have had no validation on crop yield, efficacy etc?

Mosquito Dunks from The Home Depot (US) are $8 and he'll barely need one out of six that comes in a package. It's 100% effective as a larvicide there's no reason to use peppermint oil.

I'm just saying what works for me m8.
You're very passionate about fungus gnat killing.
I wouldn't say anything unless I saw an actual change and removal of my issue.
I am currently looking at this larvicide right now and it is interesting.
I will actually be getting some for the coming summer when they run rampent.

I'm very passionate because when I had a legit problem with them everybody and their dog came out of the woodwork to parrot other nonsense they heard about vinegar bowls and such. Even RR said something absolutely stupid about using some red wine to remedy them. That will NOT work with pregnant females which are the problem and RR was very wrong. They don't care about red wine when laying. I'll link an article after. I'm not meaning to ruffle any feathers or get under anyones skin here but when it comes to some advice given around here it becomes a case of the monkey going up the ladder for the banana analogy.

People don't know why something is done they just know it's always been done that way.

I can guarantee beyond a shadow of a doubt I've had an infestation far worse than most around here. I'm talking my windowsills were black with dead fungus gnats. Thousands in the air and it was a losing battle using sticky traps, vinegar bowls and other suchwise until I decided to read for myself about fungus gnats and their 35,000 varieties. Two months of screwing around, many posts in this very thread of my struggles with them and only once I started researching it myself did I realize the information I was being given was fucking silly. Within a week of using BTI and pyrethrin spray (Raid Max Flying Insect fog in a can) they were completely gone, finito.

Now I add a few Aqua-Bac BTI granules to my misting water as a preventative and my grows are gnat free, my home is gnat free and I no longer suffer trichoderma outbreaks from those green mold spreading fuckers.

https://news.psu.edu/story/423023/2016/08/30/research/lord-gnats#:~:text=Fungus%20gnats%2C%20Lycoriella%20ingenua%2C%20are,to%20the%20tender%20young%20mushrooms.

Good read here. They're not just an annoyance they literally seek trich to lay their eggs in so it can eat it and the adults emerge from substrates covered in living trich myc.

I watched bods tek and his "as tight as fuck" description but my poly keeps loosing its tightness when I push it through the hole

I'm actually doing the opposite.

All of my jars have polyfil lids right now and it was tedious as fuck to make 100+. I plan to switch to plastic lids with a quarter sized cut SFD and/or a 1/4" hole with a few layers of micropore tape like some members prefer.

I've come to find that i prefer my lid setup to be... metal lids and bands. I use a nail to punch 5 holes in the center of the lid. Then i cover the holes with 3-4 layers of mp tape. They're cheap, easy to make and last a bunch of cycles before needing replaced.

When in the flow.... i remove the metal band and set it aside. I can wipe the whole jar with iso, threded area included. Then while i'm rubbing one out all up and into the bags.... i only have a single piece lid to deal with. And that lid also sits nice and flush on top of the jar inbetween knocking up bags.

I've used just about every lid setup you can think of... and... i prefer metal bands and lids...

That being said, I use a small screwdriver to help push the polyfil through the small 1/4" hole. I fold the poly over itself until it's tight as can be and then start to push it through the hole, being careful to never jam the screwdriver/ poker all the way through. This helps it stay super tight.

I've never had fungi gnats cause any kind of mold to spread.

If I had mold problems I would 100% look to my spawn and other possible sources first before blaming fungus gnats. Allowing a noob with fungi gnats to assume its the fungi gnats causing mold problems...might not be doing them any help.

Maybe it's possible, but I had bad infestations too. My sticky traps were covered in 1000's of them also. But no, they never caused any good healthy tubs to contaminate and many put out 6 flushes or more.

Most people I've talked to who have grown mushrooms, including commercial growers, only found them to be a nuisance and never found any correlation between the gnats and mold.

I don't wanna get into an argument, I'm just saying - if you have mold problems - don't assume it is gnats. You are far more likely using contaminated spawn.

Assuming mold problems are caused by gnats is one thing. I've said in many threads that any mold before first flush is spawn/conditions.

However it's been nigh proven by that article I linked that fungus gnats are a contamination vector for mold. I mean one need only to look at my posts over the past four months to see I went from 20lbs dry a month to not being able to harvest an ants cock worth of dry fruit but when the fungus gnats were rectified all of a sudden I'm pulling weight again.

Are they the most likely vector? Obviously not when the contamination is before first flush. Are they a contamination vector? Yes. The Penn state article I linked shows how insane pregnant females are for trichoderma..

Again.

Mold mycelium growing from the body of an adult fungus gnat.

Kind of wondering if one of these fuckers bounced around on all my cakes...

Got a rash of trich toppling them like dominoes right after first flush.
Of course it could just be delayed infection from aerial spore load, or whack MS genetics.

I'm not making any real correlation since I just saw the first fly...now two hovering around inside my SGFC today, but it is a possibility I reckon.

So over the last couple months i made up packs of doses of ten types of cubes, then tamps and pans, and gave them out to a handful of friends to try so I could get better feedback and cuz I don’t trip nearly enough to try them all in a reasonable amount of time.

I’ve heard back from 6 people who finally tried them all and across the board they all wanted more PE and pans. Like no hesitation no question no interest in the other ones

Besides those natalensis was next and then whytegold, and then nobody even really remembered what the other ones were called.

All the cube varieties except whytegold(clone) were a few ms tubs mixed together so it should’ve been a good representation of the average for each type.

The pan love didn’t surprise me but I really thought the cubes would be all over the place. Funny enough the ones that were popular aren’t really typical cubes and in natalensis’ case apparently not a cube at all, while the other normal cube varieties were lumped together as unremarkable.

Rusty whyte wasn’t included in this but since WG is related I’m not surprised people liked it based on how popular it is around here.

If pregnant female fungus gnats are seeking trich and they infest your monotub, wouldn't that mean that the trich was there to begin with?
