Thanks very much for the answers.
I thought the polyfil lids would not allow sufficient venting, good to know.
This is the level I'm currently at... I PC'd my first agar bottle last week and put 3 jars with tight unmodified lids half full of water in to keep the agar steady. Luckily only 1 lid showed any sign of expanding, and it's still useable. I imagine I could have had a mini explosion on my hands if I'd kept it on at 15 psi much longer.
I poured 20 plates and most looked ok although cleanliness during my first time using a SAB was probably ok at best.
Some of the plates had a ring of agar attached to the lids when I took them off to inoculate which snapped and landed in the middle of the plate lol. I guess they were too full.
I have attempted to inoculate 8 of the plates and intended to do 1 drop from a syringe on each and then scrape with a loop but ended up only doing that on one of them as was I worried about my tek and having the dish open too much so resorted to just dropping from the syringe and probably ended up with quite a few drops on some of them!
That was Saturday night so now I'm just waiting for signs of life although I'ma not overly hopeful. A) the syringe was about 8 months old (kept in a fridge so may be ok). B) I only waited 1 day to inoculate after pouring as I was excited, so the agar may be contaminated. Although the other 12 look clean still. C) it was my first time doing any of this so something is bound to have been missed of forgotten or the tek wasn't sterile enough somewhere along the line.
I loved it though and can't wait to do more!

If you're just doing a few monotubs a 270 degree 6500K bulb in an old stick lamp without a shade will work. Buy the bulb, find an old lamp. Or buy a plug in shop light.
Full spectrum doesn't mean much when it comes to Amazon/ebay LEDs and yadda. Least it did when I was looking at them. You want more 6500k than anything else I've been told.

Can someone share a sterile technique vid for innoculating and impulse sealing spawn bags in front of a hood? I'm sitting at about an 70-85% fail rate with bags, and I work in front of a 2'x2' hood and seal with a quality sealer (AIE brand). I cook my ~#5 bags at 15PSI for 3 hours.
I don't want to elaborate too much as I have a suspicion it's a sterilization or handling problem (I've had whole batches of bags go bad after just sitting for a week - could be the sterilizer or how I'm folding / handling them). Would 4 hours at 15PSI be too crazy to rule out sterilization failure?

4 hours used to be the standard, that would be just fine. Just be careful you don't run out of water, that's all! I would bet it's not a sterilization issue so much as technique. Myers Mushrooms has a video about inoculating and sealing, i believe more than one, one with a standard AIE sealer and one with a vertical sealer. That thing is hella slick, but very pricey.

What are you inoculating with?
Are you venting your cooker properly before putting the jiggle weight on?
Are you certain your flow works properly? (ie. do you pour agar or do other sterile work in front of it regularly with success?)

I've watched Myer's video's, almost all of them, but in the video I believe you're describing he has a whole 6'+ wall of flow hoods, very different from my arrangement on a single 2'x2' hood. I have the AIE sealer ($180 retail if you shop around but it's $250 on Amazon). I copy his technique as close as I can. I'm also inclined to guess it's a technique issue as blaming the PC is kinda lame, but almost all the bags I don't innoc also go bad if left long enough.
*edit: though I try not to leave bags just laying around, so my sample size is really small (maybe 2-3 batches left for more than a week)
*edit2: I also just realized that I PC my quart mason jars for 2.5 hours since I noticed in spring that under 2 hours will consistently result in contams. So maybe my PC is fudged up (it's guages don't work anymore I just go off it's sound w/ 3 quarters) or maybe I'm unlucky but I'll try 3 hours next time).

yes I always vent for 10+ minutes. Just got an AA 25x ($50 bucks on craigslist) so I'm trying 20PSI for 2 hours sometime this week. Since building my hood I've had all kinds of trouble, but it usually passes the open plate test (opening a plate for 30 seconds). Sometimes I get contams around the edges on agar but I credit that bad finger placement which I've been working on. Every now and then I get a scatter pattern that would indicate either a bad filter or my fat fingers in the way, but it's infrequent and hasn't happened since i really cracked down on my finger placement. Never had any problems when I was in a SAB but my volume was way lower and I wasn't using bags. G2G is often 100% success if I'm not gambling on some shitty inoculum, another reason to think the hood is OK.
Most recently I innoc'd with some LC syringes that were tested as clean; I thought that would be good for troubleshooting since it's easier to squirt a few cc's than it is pour grain IMO. But the failure rate is pretty consistent regardless of innoc medium, though I haven't tried agar and maybe I should.
It may be worth noting that I had almost 90% success rate when I started folding the top half inch of the bag before sealing. Generally I position my inoculum to the left, bag in the center and sealer to the right, orientated perpendicular to the hood. After innoc'ing I inflate the bag then seal, all within 'sterile flow' though because my hood is only 2'x2' my bags outer edge is pretty close to dirty air, but I can't really make it much tighter.
sorry for blabbin just trying to figure this out, been a problem for the better part of the year.

I have a big bag of these laying around.
https://www.amazon.ca/uxcell%C2%AE-500Pcs-Polypropylene-Graduated-Container/dp/B00NWF3AUM
Would they be best used for medium term LC sample storage, tiny slants, or micro dosing tea and freezing for later?
Probably not PP5...

What should you do right after you finished dunking a tub for a few hours?
They are so wet! I feel like leaving the lid off until it dries out a bit is right?
Blast it with a fan?

It should be fine. If you dont like it that wet dont soak it that much or at all.
I simply do it like Bodhisatta recommends, just pour an 1/8 of a cup down the corner of your tub and you are done

True Myer's does have a shitload more room, but certain techniques don't change based on room. The last line has me pretty convinced it's sterile tek, but i would still be inclined to test the PC a little further, especially since you know you have to let jars go longer than usual. Are you at high elevation? Google image search for "pressure cooker elevation." If you're less than 3000' above sea level, it's negligible. Granted, even ignoring that, 3 quarters on the rocker should mean it rocks somewhere between 17 and 18 psi. I have two quarters and they are dead still at 16-16.5 psi. So that should eliminate that as a possibility. Do you preseal the bags? If so, how do you open them afterward? How do you store your sealer? I use the plastic C-shaped holder that was shipped with it to keep it "closed" when not in use. The sealing surface isn't touching, but it's close enough to (hopefully) keep a lot of dust and debris off. Can't confirm if it actually does help, but i like to think it does. Good quality bags right? Not cheap ebay crap? My only other suggestion would be to pay careful attention to not touch the open top of the bag when you're sealing them, fold the gusseting from the bottom up, then place the end in the sealer and go.

Should a 35cc jar work for using as a slant?
I see that generally when people make slants here they use very large tubes (100mm). But i dont see the reason why, is it just to have a lot of mycelium for years to come?
I am a very ocassional grower and wouldnt mind a smaller jar if that were the case

Yeah that should work just fine. The idea behind a slant is that there's a lot of volume of agar so it doesn't dry out. Using the tubes is nice because it's compact and the small opening helps prevent against contams when taking slices out.

Me too, very small scale. So, I got 5 tubes in the fridge already because they were purchased from trusted vendors with good stuff inside. Kinda just happened along the way.
Hoping the grab the Pioppino print from PsiloPsychIn for LAGM 2021 when ComebackKid sez gooooo!

is it THAT necessary to dunk cakes after birthing? I mean... the substrate was already at field capacity.
I understand dunking after first flush, but why at birth? It feels unnecessary.
Im testing some atl#7 cakes/pucks by the way
