Do I need to use a sterile STILL air box (SAB)? Are there other techniques to use while inoculating jars?
Thanks
Yes you should work in a SAB or in front of a flow hood
you can noc the jars either: A2G (agar to grain) G2G (grain to grain) LC/LI (liquid culture/liquid inoculant)

I run bags in my prestos all the time (only use jars as masters) and maybe get a popped bag every 10 cycles. There is no need to buy an AA just for bags.
I'd get the AA to avoid seals breaking though. I run my prestos so much i go through a seal in 6 months at the absolute most. I love my AA but its only a 915.
Really want a few 940s. Cant do the electric ones cause I'm on solar and it's a lot of power to run multiple electric units.

How many bags of wheat do you get in that presto?
I've been cramming ted style in my 75x but without pre-seal. Been thinking about doing some small batches in my presto, I can get 5 in my 1915x but have been having steam leakage.

You don't have to pre seal them with an impulse sealer. I roll and press all the air out of my bags and then seal them with clear packaging tape. The packaging tape peels right off the bags after a pc cycle. Then you can inoculate them anyway you like and impulse seal them afterward.

I roll wrap, works great especially for bottom bags.

No i dont seal my bags. In fact I did a whole thread on me not sealing and leaving bags on the shelf for extended times. https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26664387
I can fit 4 bags in my 915 and 6 in my prestos. Again no presealing. I use lids as spacers between bags and trivets to separate the layers of bags. Bags are accordion folded with the filter facing inward and they are geld closed by the tribet and weight of bags on top.
Upon cooldown all the bags seal themselves so I just plop them on a shelf til Im ready to use them. I dont usually let bags sit for more than a few days but Ive let them sit for months with no issues

Ah, I don't use spacers so that likely accounts for my extra bag in the 1915x.

What are you guys doing when you knot the bags like that? Just twisting it up and zip tie or something similar? Would you think you can do that in a SAB provided there is room? Or do you need a sterile flow cause you'll be pushing air into the bag when you twist and tie?

Do you find that you need the tape? Mine hold just fine without.
@camera I don't want to but in front of Nate's reply but I use zip ties, and if you're using a SAB I'd bet that ties would work better than a sealer due to the confined space.

I bunch up the top, fold it over, then zip tie the fold closed. Never had issues doing it this way.

Yeah zip-ties are the best. I mean I guess if you have the space sealing them works but one of those nice magnetic sealers is like $250 or something and in my limited space zip-ties are fast and for me they've always worked 100% of them time
p9, you're still having steam leakage issues on the 915 even after using vaseline? did you try doing a some clean up and buffing on the seal with a scouring pad?

I find that handling the bags after wrapping them loosens them back up. Sealing them with the tape keeps them nice and tight while putting them in the pc. I also feel like there is no threat of extra moisture getting into the bags during the pc cycle.

FrankHorrigan uses zip ties in this write up, and he also uses a SAB in a grow tent. So it's definitely possible, just might need a bigger SAB or to come up with something (vertical, or two stacked) unless you already got a giant sized one

Thanks faht. --------------------------------
The substrate is a bit uncolonized towards the bottom but the surface is close to 100%. If I fruit it, will the mycelium keep expanding and eventually colonize the bottom too?

I haven't got around to it yet, I've cleaned it up and got some petroleum jelly but haven't run it through a cycle yet.

thanks for the link!
Mine may be tall enough, or I can do like I think Crack wrote up and just raise my SAB off the surface a little
I have a nice mag sealer
But have only used it a few times lol, pre-seal and noc with LC I aspirated to syringe
If I had a great way or got better at filling syringes I would keep doing it, but I only ran like that twice. Hoping to be using the sealer a lot more once I get a hood. I'd like to G2G with the bags or pour the LC

Check out myers for the FFUs when they are back in stock...I think thats the best thing going for a suitable hood at this time. I think his website says january or february. You could also try ordering direct from china but without knowing what vendors are good it's prob hit or miss.

I have some good quality bags laying around that I never got around to using. You guys are really giving me the push though. I tried bags twice with out much luck. I don't have an impulse sealer though so tried bag clamps and I think those and the fact I was using a rather short SAB caused most of my problems. I know I've seen some people using zip ties and such..... I need to do some more digging I guess and give them another shot.
