moldfest
i think the substrate being open to air will dry out thru the verm layer. shrinking the cake enough to allow contams to fall down the side between the glass.

That moldfest should definetively trigger pinning though
Let's just call it a "novelty grow"

id guess the dry verm layer with the lid holes is the combined 'filter' but in all honesty when i ran cakes i taped the holes.
first with masking tape ...later mp tape

Yeah I've always used MP tape but have always heard that the verm layer is adequate. I don't know why anyone would ever do this as a tek. It's just been along time since I ran pf jars and it's making me nostalgic and froggy. I may put the jars in a sort of psuedo FC to keep RH around jars slightly higher while still allowing open air to reach the jars. Basically, I'm bored until my plates can go to grains.....

I've never done a classic cake. Might try a couple for funsies. I wonder about whole riche cakes nocced via LI. Perhaps with the porous structure it would allow the innoculant to trickle down.

Got a GrowKit now for the start to get Clone-material for Agar and also way more spores as i could get for the money by buying spore-syringes.
Not sure if I should my own way with the kit or the Guide-way. Guide-way says I should soak it 12h then putting it in the Grow-Bag, most of the rest ist nonsense.
What do u guys think? I think about soaking it maybe 16-24h, then giving it like 24h or 48 then taking the cake out of the box und put it in an old cleaned MonoTub which is like 200% of the size of the cake. Rest is like giving it enough fresh air, maybe misting it if necessary - Handle it like a normal monoTub.
Edit: Good2Know - Its full-colonized.

Thank you, I'll go this way.
Got 35 Agar-dishes now, 14 of them with Sporedrops, rest just agar. The 20 older-ones are now 6 days old, most of them have germinated spores - 0 of them show any kind of contamination. Not sure how long it needs til contaminations came up, too long ago I made a grow. Should I see contaminations at this point on the agar?
Thinking about going for more Sporedrops on these plates, but I don't want to waste my spores for a maybe currently contaminated dish. How long should I wait?

It depends on the temperature you are incubating the plates at, but if it's been six days and there are no signs of contamination on them, they are probably clean.

Coco Coir

Safe to just hydrate OR pour boiling water over (I know it will over colonize this way, mycelium likes it better cooked) and use as a casing? Been reading on the SE and some people got to experience mold issues with their coir. Granted, lots of theories on why it happened but still... Anyway, how many of you just hydrate their coir and case and just go on with it?

Its most of the time around 21 degrees +-2 duringday/night - But the spore-germination should be slowed down also then, thats why I am a bit amazed to see the spores germinating very well and currently not even one spot of contamination. This rate is way better then expected, especially becauce I had the feel that my hnadmovements were a bit awkward and not optimal most of the time.
We will see, tomorrow evening I'll go for more spore-inoculation if they still look that well.

That will depend on the brand I think. I normally underhydrate my coir in a bucket and the next morning add boiling water until it's got the moisture content I want. But I've tried this with another brand and it didn't work very well. Triched during the first flush.
So my process is far from proper pasturisation but it works well for me. No casing just a top layer.
If you don't want to experiment, and risk loss, then follow a tek.
