I don't think it's new. Even back when it was popular to layer sub & spawn they'd add a little layer on top. I can remember grow kits over 10 years ago having a casing recommendation. It probably depends more on where you got your info.

I just know when I first signed up the top layer was kind of catching on and becoming normal practice. My third or fourth tub I tried it out and it was a huge difference since I didn’t know shit about conditions.

Thanks for clearing that up guys, had it mixed up in my head this whole time. I've been doing lower spawn ratios but I think I'll try something more like 1:2 and see how that stacks up.
And @AKA, that's genius and I'd do that but I don't have the space for substrates even outside tubs

I guess time will have to tell if I see a decent yield, fuckin nerve racking. Lesson learned, gonna case or at the very least mix my sub much better next time

I'm thinking about prepping a syringe to draw up some LC today. Am I wrong in thinking that RR's boiling approach is enough?
Quote:

I fill a pot with water and drop the syringe in. After the water has boiled for ten minutes, pull the syringe out and suck in the boiling water, swish it around and squirt it out. Do this a few times. The syringe will be sterile enough for mycology, I assure you. I've done it this way for years. RR

Awesome!
Well I was boiling away thinking this is great, however, I think my syringes are a bit messed up, they were probably single use and I've already run them through the PC once. So they weren't drawing or expelling after the boil.
This gave me a reason to think of another way of doing things. And I came up with this:

Using a metal straw. I reckon it could work. I didn't test it out because to flame the straw high enough up I would need to wear some gloves, that thing was getting hot, and I didn't have a pair clean enough on hand. So with the SAB all setup I just poured the LC this time. But will revisit the drinking straw approach.
Any reason not to try this?

Very nice second flush! These yetis are ridiculously slow for me, is it your case too? Like way slower than PE varieties. I really don't see myself growing much of these, besides a one off grow for the novelty and the weird looks.

I've not cultivated any pe variety tbh, but yes these are definately slow. I'm gonna run a clone and see if I can get something more aggressive. I also chucked a quart of yeti and Melmak together to see what happens but I've not got a lot of interest tbh. Gonna run APE next and if that's a stronger trip I'll work with that for a bit.
Did you have a gander at the trip report I did on them? I referenced your experience briefly

No, I wasn't aware you did a trip report. Will take a look now.

My ape cakes were the fastest out of all my cakes. The two ape cakes are over a week ahead of the rust spore cake in the background. My grow area for the last month was in the mid 60s in the day and high 50s at night but the last week or so I've had it in the upper 60s.

Coir top layer makes more sense than not using one. Coir is contam resistant, grains ain't if the myc dies on em say if the grain dries out.
A grain without living myc protecting it is a carbohydrate foothold for contamination.
Makes no sense not to as cheap insurance, it's not really any extra effort and all it requires is a few handfuls of leftover coir. Don't really care myself if it does or doesn't, I stopped doing it now I do it again, feels like surface conditions are waaaaaaaay easier to maintain. Wasn't getting the same lingering microbeads of water with exposed grains.

I also find the texture of the surface to be more conducive to pinning with a top layer.

Got 17 tubs spawned today/yesterday. Most 1 bag into 2 tubs, but a few 1 whole bag in 1 tub. Some Melmac, Red Boy, and KSSS. Got a half dozen bags bout ready in the next few days.
Dunno bout this lady of 1000 tubs tho.
