If you'r getting another one I highly rec upgrading to the coleman propane torch.
They will sterilize any tool in a matter of seconds or less.
And also definitely sterilize your tool if possible in the pc so they are nice and fresh for each use.

Sterilization of your tools is a good idea. But not necessary. You'll flame them before use but getting the tool a full PC cycle now and then is not a bad idea. I use a propane torch I prefer not to dick around with butane torches even good ones that cost 70$ break in a few years a brass propane tip lasts forever(without the piezoelectric shit)
When working at the sab i run the torch on low, I have a little baby food jar of 91% to Dip my scalpel or inoculation loop in before flaming

Yep, you really can't beat the $15 propane torch at Walmart. And additional propane tanks are only $4. It's cheaper, lasts longer, and heats up stuff way faster than the small butane torches.

I may have to switch to one of those propane ones too. Seems like they're a bit better I guess.
I just really liked the stand and everything mine had. I'll try that flaming the handle. That should really be a big help I'm thinkin'.
Thanks for chiming in, everyone. This thread is the tits!

I have a pretty nice butane torch. It's powerful enough to sweat copper pipes so sterilizing a scalpel or loop is no trouble. I got it from the head shop so it must be good for doing dabs too. I overpaid for it since I bought it at a head shop, but they're a good deal on eBay.

I just use a wickless denatured alcohol burner. Works pretty good and doesn't leave carbon.

Alcohol lamps I despise not hot enough imo and a nearly clear flame. Propane is way less expensive as well.

Recently I had to put wedges in 10 jars cause I didn't wanna wait for 1 jar to colonize so I could g2g; I wanted to use all the jars right away. Man that shit is so slow. As soon as the myc hit the grain it just stopped spreading outward for a day or so.
Your 4 quart jars are probably gonna beat my 10. I wonder why that is?

Do you shake after you inoc with a wedge? My agar to grains have been taking like 2 weeks, and my wedges aren't necessarily huge.
Those fuckin ate the jars right up. Lately I've just been doing A2G and LI for everything, staggering it so that I don't have to wait too long for something to happen.

I get better growth if I don't shake with a wedge I just kinda shake the wedge down with a upward swoop kinda motion

I don't shake too much but my PE is also pretty aggressive. I usually just roll the jar to get it where I want it. When I do shake I get a few extra colonies popping up elsewhere in the jar but it doesn't amount to too much unless you use multiple wedges.

Ya mine are about the same if everything is good it takes about 2 weeks I usually make four jars off one plate... pretty much every time I've used a whole plate for one jar I get some funk going but it could just be my luck that that plate had a bit of something else

Yeah, less is often more if you're not 100% sure about the cleanliness. I'm still sketched out by tiger drops and I haven't seen a contam on a plate in months.

Here's a couple of the jars today:
I didn't shake, just dropped it right on top. The cultures just fuzzed up pretty good for a day or sobbefore they started spreading. Also, I haven't really had much rhizo growth on the plates but when the myc hit the grains they started getting rhizo. (Agar is 4th transfer from ms).
inoculated on the 30th

I shake the shit out of my jars right away and then 3-4 days later and they are usually done in 10 days from inoculation, also I find moisture content to play a huge role in wedge jars, when I'm on the dry side is when I find it taking longer than normal. These were about 7-8 days after inoculation, and the bags in the back were LI started the same day as the jars
