I mighta read the wrong part of that thread was looking at fahts pot thing there. I like the cooler methodology so guess I'm going shopping.
Are people just straight up wrong about good results with using coir as a casing?

Ive never had good results using it. The myc tears thru it and its not a casing anymore.
Barrel steamers work well for pasteurizing too

i remember you talking about wheat 2 years ago. you said you loved it. do you still use wheat solo on its own? i use milo now. i love the fact that milo has high nutrient density. you can pack a lot of it into a spawn bag, way more than oats. but it tends to explode rather easily. i'm thinking about trying out wheat.

let your grain spawn consolidate about 7 days or right before you start to see moisture in the jars. i case my PE tubs 7 days after they are spawned. if you don't let the spawn consolidate enough that's usually when you see blobs.

+1 for coir sucking huge dicks as a casing layer. i've tried it several times with different timings and it failed every time. the only person i know of that has had success with coir as a casing is pasty. i think it might come down to timing but that's something i want to avoid. i want to make things easier for myself, not harder.
you can pasteurize casing in larger bags, just like that gallon zip loc tek. i've pasteurized casing in spawn bags before. it's much easier than using jars.

These days I’m using WBS. But really grain choice is a toss up between convenience and cost. Right now WBS is convenient.

When pasteurizing in XL spawn bags what do you do about the filter patch or does it even matter at that point?
Let's say I took my presto 23, threw rings under the trivet. Filled say 3 xl spawn bags and kept the casing mix and water at the same level, bags standing up and filter patch outside the water. Could I use say a remote meat temperature probe stuck down into the middle of one of the bags and just boil them trying to more or less hold pasteurization temp then call it good?
Edit, saw the caveat about boiling, still.. I wouldn't mind letting them sit sealed for the microbes to recover.

Using a spawn bag to pasteurize material is like using a wrench as a hammer.

i bring the water to a boil and then shut off the heat. i turn the heat on again if the water dips below 150F. when the thermometer probe inside the bag hits 140F, i start the 60 minute timer. the core temp is all that really matters.
i also use long enough bags that i can submerge the bags underwater with the top of the bag sticking out the side of the pot (so no water gets inside the bags). the bags are held in place by the lid. this helps them heat up more evenly. also you have the right idea about putting some rings or small jars at the bottom of your pot so the casing isn't sitting on the bottom of the pot getting really hot.

It would be much safer to just not boil them at all. I wouldnt do it that way. I havent had issues with the filter. It usually is just above the water leven for me tho. I roll the tops of the bags down. Temp probe is recommended.
Lol, ive used a wrench as a hammer too I just use what ive got. I didnt buy them for that purpose. Just dont use turkey bags unless u double or tripple layer them, lol.

with big bags, if you don't boil the water it takes 2 or 3 hours for the core temp to reach 140F. aint nobody got time for that. i just make sure to give the bags a good mixing afterwards to mix up the core with the partially sterilized sections.

Well. I'm a horrible klutz.
I knocked over a couple agar plates this morning, and they were exposed to air for about 10 seconds.
Let them continue to grow or trash them now?

Are they disposable? If so just see what happens. You can transfer any new growth as soon as you see it to be safe.

"In 1960 O'Sullivan published a study carried out in Birmingham comparing the colony counts obtained with the pour-plate method with those obtained by culture of a "standard loopful" of urine. For the inoculating loop method, a platinum wire loop , with 3 mm internal diameter, was used to sample the urine specimen, and the loopful spread over a nutrient agar plate. article The standard loops are made from twisted Nichrome 5 wire. Nichrome 5 is fast cooling and exceptionally durable, and the twisted shank does not vibrate as much as single wires. "
