I feel like this was an underrated suggestion
You would have to sterilize the coir and keep it sterile while spawning
You’ll all thank me when coronavirus mutates and decimates the planet’s entire grain supply. Everyone will be using yeet’s malt coir tek and I will ascend to shroomy godhood

Even the little butane torches suck. Get a propane torch.

Soak the cakes and fruit them and you'll see our speculations are irrelevant in this case the pins on your cake will either develop into mature fruits or not. Hope that helps. Gl

Question for you guys that know gourmets/Woodlovers.
I’ve read a few times that you should use way less spawn with them, what happens when you use a lot?

It’s not that you have to it’s that you want to. Gourmet substrate is supplemented, typically with bran, soybean hulls, etc., so you can use less spawn, thereby allowing you to inoculate more sub. The supplement makes up for the lower spawn rate. Supplement is cheaper than grain/spawn, so that adds up significantly when running a gourmet farm.

What’s a good ratio for unsupplemented, in your opinion? I gave my first batch of oyster spawn the 100% shake yesterday and am planning to Lipa tek it this weekend, but haven’t settled on my ratios yet.

10-20% supplement of total dry weight of sub. I don’t believe lipas tek calls for sterilization but I haven’t looked at it in a few years so could be wrong. Remember, supplemented sub requires sterilization.

Makes sense.
I’m just wondering cuz I’m trying natalensis with hwfp but forgot that on the off chance it does like it I should’ve used a whole lot less grain than I did. I wasn’t sure if it causes problems like with pans.
The lipa tek is just bucket tek with sawdust basically.

Gourmet species tend to not fruit properly from just grain-starch, which is why just grain isn't used. Even if you did just grain, the fruits usually look very sick. Wood is supplemented (enriched) because it doesn't contain enough nutrients, notably nitrogen. I personally don't use starch products.
If you add a starch based product to wood, coir, paper (so on), you increase contamination to almost anything. Almost all organisms, can utilize starch to germinate and then grow out.

So I bought 100lb of rolled barley without realizing it was rolled. Hydrated it gently and have 4 bags in the PC meow. It looks like it oughta work out just fine. Hopefully myc likes it nice n lightly processed. Grains kinda plumped up mostly as normal yet didn't require a full boil.

That's why I was extra gentle with the hydration. Fortunately it's just for bulk and I can massage it in the bag. I'll know soon enough

I’ve used pearled barley mixed with millet with good results before. Not sure what rolled is
