well the surface of the fruits can be covered in contams that you could potentially stir up. just like when you wipe down a plate before opening it. you're gonna have to handle the fruit while cloning it, so its best for it to be clean to do so.
for cubes i'll usually clone via pins, and yeah sometimes but not always I will do at least one water bath. but with wilds I always do 2-3 baths.
throwback to an old clone plate that had some wild growth. the water baths help reduce this kinda thing.

gonna have to put my faith in the cleanliness of fruit surfaces lying in open air in a public grocery store then.. jesus remember your unfaithful servant, shine thy uv light on the bad germs, but let the good germs thrive.
BUT WAIT A SEC !
Going by your logic munch, why not clean it in iso - wouldnt that achieve even more of what you are trying to do when cleaning it in water

you're gonna grow covid on your plates
and why not flame sterilize your hands?! hahaha... cause iso damages mycelium!! sterile water works just fine to clean it up. don't go all overkill.

Fuck that's very similar to what I do to clone pins that have been growing open air. I use 2 little jam jars with sterile water. I squirt a drop of bleach with a syringe in the first jar though and then drop the pin, close the lid and swirl it around a bit, then rinse it off in the second jar. Works like a charm. The bleach part is pobrably overkill but it doesn't seem to hurt anything.

Someone in some thread linked a video from Southwest Mushrooms talking about grain spawn prep, and i cannot find it for the life of me. I thought it was in this thread, but didn't see it and i checked both his channels, Mushroom Mike Crowe and Southwest Mushrooms. He was using millet, and i believe just added water to the bag then sterilizing. Video showed him weighing out millet and water, prepping bags.
Edit: Found the source! But no wonder why i can't find the video, it's set to private. Fuuuuuuuck, it was a great video! https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/26484954/fpart/5/vc/1#26484954

I think something may be up with my colonizing monotub. First of all, I mixed BRF spawn in there 8 days ago from today, and it hasn't been colonizing much at all. I was told yesterday it was because there was no gas exchange b/c the clamps were down, so yesterday I undid the clamps, and today I notice a very, very strong, sweet smell filling the room. It's like super sweet coco coir smell. I'm wondering if I should just toss it to avoid inevitable contamination, advice please anyone?

if thats really at day 8, its a goner. it shoulda been 100% by now.
I will never recommend spawning brf cakes... cakes do best as cakes.

That sweet smell is a clear sign of contamination, reinforced by the fact you spawned it 8 days ago and nothing is happening. It should have been 100% colonized in 5-7 days. Def nothing to do with clamping the lid.

I was going to add this to my last post but now there's been a couple posts so i don't feel as much of a dick for posting again. Plus I like answering things that look like they were missed.

They lose potency fast but that's over the course of days, not minutes. I will also parrot everyone else, relax! You'll learn patience in time.

EloquentParadox said: How feasible is it to grow in my bedroom? Is it even possible to create a sterile enviroment if you sleep in the same room? What kind of room do you use? How do work around a small amount of space?
Totally feasible. The biggest concern is making sure your cultures and spawn are sterile and clean. If you have clean spawn, spawning tubs can be done in any environment and your tubs are at very low risk of contamination, even with foot traffic. Buy a couple shoeboxes and have at it. The SAB is where you do your sterile work, and as long as there are zero air currents, you'll be fine.

I want to be dating, but now is not the right time in my life. Mostly time/priority, but a portion of me not wanting to date is having to keep this gigantic felony a secret. I love sharing everything with my partner, good and bad, and i know that i CANNOT share this with a new girlfriend for at least a solid year AND i have to know that she either A) is totally fine with it or B) won't turn my ass in for it. The one big thing i have going for me is that, unless i'm actively working on the hobby, everything is in the basement so that can just be off limits.

Got it.. tossing it now. Damn that's a shame if I knew I would've put those cakes in the SGFC. Anyways, is there a chance that this contaminated my grow room? Or no worries there .. asking because the case was right next to several of my cakes in my sgfc

probably stands a better chance that putting them through your cheese grater. but to me its neurotic to add an additional step when the cakes are ready to fruit when they colonized

^ the whole room stunk of that sweet/musty smell, even though I only opened the clasps. Will this affect my grow room's cakes which were right next to it? or my gloves nearby, or any of that? Lmk sooner than later if I have to clean the room or change settings please, that's all. Thanks
