So I should bring some of the items back and if so what won’t I need? Just want to make sure I get my money back if I’m not using certain things. Can you grow king oyster and enoki with oats, wbs, shoeboxes and verm/coir?

Yeah but also you need hwfp to add to the coir.
This was my first shot at it and I messed it up bad but still got a couple decent ones.

You can find grow logs of people doing them in monos. I guess you don’t need hwfp if you use a ton of spawn instead but they’re really cheap.

Hello you all,
(back to cubes) My apologies if this has been covered recently... My god this thread keeps truckin on if you skip a few days.
I am curious what room temp people start seeing more contams/smaller fruit when growing cubes in monos. Seems that I am seeing more in the mid to high 70's f. (the tubs themselves being warmer than that)

The big king oysters you did grow look pretty tasty. What is hwfp and do you add it in with the bucket Tek for coir?

Very cool vid p9hu7!
@ mh333 - Personally, I wouldn’t bother with coir and verm. It’s best to sterilize your sawdust/HFP though there are teks (lipa) for not doing so if not supplementing. However, you can really increase yields and decreases spawn required for said yields by supplementing your sawdust/hfp with bran, which will definitely require sterilization. As such, bags are the way to go for this. I usually run 60% H2O and 40% dry ingredients which are 20% bran 80% sawdust/hfp. Is that clear as mud? This is all by weight but of course you can convert it to volume once you figure out how much certain measuring vessels of everything weighs...ie, 1.5gal of water is 12lbs, scoop of hfp is x lbs, etc...
Ex:
20lbs sub:
12lbs H2O 1.6lbs Bran 6.4lbs Wood

No reishi antlers cant be grown in a shoebox. They need lots of head room and close to 0 fresh air exchange.

I kind of suspected that he is or was a shroomerite, his procedures are pretty spot on, no crazy youtube junk. He definitely gets results and has good technique.

This is all alien to me. What is hfp and where do I get these supplies including the wood/sawdust? What is your sub ratio and blah blah blah... lol, so many questions. Do you have any Tek’s for the substrate and how to make the spawn? Would I still be able to use wbs and oats for the spawn? I’ve also never ran bags before, but I’m guessing it’s the same concept as jars but with bags instead. I may just run back to the farm store and bring back the verm and coir. Would I still be able to use the jars with plastic lids and sfd quarters?

Hey AA921 owners... how many quarts can you pack in these bad boys? Can you get 10 like the Presto 23q ones? Just got my hands on 2 that are practically new... gonna suck if they can only run 7...

Hwfp is hard wood fuel pellets.
You could still use normal grains and grain jar lids. Bags are just easier.

Spawn is the same and can be made in jars or bags, no matter what you’re growing. As far as sub prep goes, you just mix the water, hfp and bran, thoroughly, load into bags at 5-10 pounds and sterilize. Once cool, add spawn, seal, mix up and let colonize. I use 3T bags and work in front of a hood. I like to seal with a sealer but some people just tie them or fold and clamp with something. You should check the gourmet board...you’ll find tons of info there.

Hwfp are next to charcoal at the store.
They’re little pellets like the size of a 00 gel cap. I just dump them in a bucket like coir and they blow up into sawdust when you add hot water.
Mycolorado does bran really make that much difference?? I got a bag last week now that I figured out how to fruit Kings and lions mane I thought I should do the sub right.
Also does anybody know if lions mane lc looks different? I’m planning on switching over from grainspawn but the myc is so odd with lions mane idk what to look out for.
Also mad hatter I made a thread in gourmets months ago asking about switching from cubes to edibles and got a lot of good answers with link and videos explaining it all. All the best gourmet growers are in this forum though the other one is a little slower.

I have a question.. If mycelium on a plate colonizes only the surface then why is it that if you add food coloring to the agar mix then as the culture grows the color fades? My understanding is that whatever is available at the surface is what the mycelium consumes, so where does the color go?? I have a little experiment running that I'm collecting data on to satisfy my curiosities but I figure maybe someone could maybe shed some light on this for me.

Lions mane myc does look different and is a lot more sporadic with growth

Basically the bran provides the nutrients that the spawn would provide so you can use less spawn/make more blocks. You can play around with ratios to find the sweet spot...I never worked that hard to figure it out. If you’re gonna use no grain spawn and noc your sub with LC, you’ll definitely want to use bran.

It does colonize the whole thing. Obviously it had to cuz like you said it will drain all the color out but a while back a guy wanted to see for sure so he flipped the agar puck into the lid and cut a thin slice off the bottom and put it on a new plate. It grew pretty quick.
