Do you still wipe down the SAB with iso at least and let it evaporate before you spray it? Could help.. I mean technically a dirty SAB should work but you may as well have it clean to help your chances.

You should flame part of the handle of your scalpel if you are only getting molds after X number of transfers. This is probably just mold spores hitching a ride on the handle, so if you are only flaming the tip of your scalpel, I can see why you are having trouble. I know this didn't appeal to you the first time I suggested it but it seems like you don't have anything else to try for the time being.

I guess it's because my torch is a benzomatic, so it takes a little while to warm up the blade alone. I can't imagine flaming the handle so long it started to turn red. That would take forever. Or how hot are you talking about flaming the handle, supa? I remember you saying up to around the indent?

Don't flame the handle red, that would be insane. Just hit the end of the handle where the blade is, about an inch or so back, for 2-3 seconds. You do want the thing to be holdable.

I guess you're like "fuck those vectors" huh? I should start sterilizing batches of tools ahead of time, that'd probably gimme a % or 3 back toward success rate.

I should really have a few scalpels. I don't know why the hell I hadn't even considered that
How are you making loops, cronicr? The only one I made was guitar wire, but it was too floppy to be really useable. I remember someone using a bread bag tie. Do you just wrap it to a pen or something?

aren't those pretty thick though? You do transfers and everything with loops too? I kinda thought they were mostly for inoculation with spores.

I searched your name and "nail scissors" and all it links back to is here. Do you have a link to your original post? Thanks.
Never mind. It's in this thread.

I use 20 gauge kanthal vape wire for loops. I have a couple scalpel handles and I just attach the wire loops to those. It's sturdy enough to take pulls from slants and really holds up to the torch.
The actual scalpel I use is takes bigger blades and is round with a knurled grip. Much easier to hold.

I'm using loops on my next set of transfers. I think I'm either not being careful enough or my nerve damage really will make this harder. I gotta say though it's wicked nice to flame a loop in 2 seconds. But other times an edge is needed..

Yeah, but that is before I start my session. I don't PC my scalpel so what I do is wipe my work area and tools with iso and then flame it up about half way up the handle just once and set it on a jar to cool. While it cools, I start wiping my PP5s with iso so I'm not just sitting on my ass waiting for it to cool. Then, I just flame about an inch or so up the handle once every few transfers. Flaming just an inch or so means that the part that will be over your petri will be sterilized well and it is not enough for it to conduct all the way to where you're holding it.
IIRC, you are using the #7 as well right? That one is easy peasy, very thin so it heats up fast. Even when I flame it halfway up the handle, it takes 2-3 minutes for the heat to saturate through the entire handle, more than enough to get the job done without burning myself. But since you are PCing it before your session, all you need to do is flame an inch or so every few transfers, flaming most of the handle is unneccessary.
Is this what you are talking about?

The one I have has a bigger nozzle it seems but that should do well with a #7 handle. If it was a #3L, that would be a headache. That thing is thick. Incoule is probably right, even flaming it for a few seconds should do it since spores die pretty easily. I just like to err on the side of caution and get it red hot, only takes half a minute anyway. I think that RR used to say that even a temperature of boiling water is enough to kill trich spores.

I just hit the 2-3" above the blade with the flame for a few seconds. not red-hot at all. if I'm digging deep into a slant, then ill go longer.

Supa, mine's more like this:

Thanks, everyone. That helps quite a bit. That's not what I was doing at all. I was just flaming the whole blade until red hot. So it makes sense now why I've been getting this all of a sudden.
I guess I just got lucky before being it was cooler.
