I guess it could be laying eggs either in the filter or in the jar threads and then they hatch and work their way into the jar while they’re still super tiny.
I’m so ready for winter.

Lightly lube the threads of the jar with a small amount of citronella oil on a paper towel? Gnats and fruit flies won't go near that shit, house flies either.

I hope the citronella oil works star . I’m thinking about just netting up my whole shelf I got the jars on. And just doing routinely spraying my room with the oil.. I think aka hit the nail on the head with the maggots themselves crawling through . Oddly enough tho I haven’t noticed any maggots in my oat jars wonder why

Does anyone think this could potentially be hazardous because it’s a bacteria? Bacillus thuringiensis israelis. Used for killing fungus flys and larvae

Not sure about that specific subspecies but isn’t there a bacillus thuringiensis that’s used on organic grains? I’m pretty sure that’s what makes them so much harder to sterilize iirc

Bacillus thuringenesis var israelis is the species they use as natural pesticide on organic grain. They produce a lot of different cry toxins in addition to other toxins. Most of these cry toxins are inactive until contact with pH swings in the insect gut. Basically a protein sheath melts away and the toxin can then cleave the insect carapace apart. It seems different cry toxins react better in different insects to ensure broad lethality.
It also is being studied for its antifungal properties.

Pasty thanks for dropping the knowledge bomb on me. So it could be potentially bad to have all those toxins being released in my grow area right. Plus for it to work I would need it in contact with whatever the bugs are in contact with meaning my jars . So it could hurt my jars more than help ?
Do you think sum grade 90 cheese cloth or no see ums screen could keep the gnats away from my jars ?

Cry toxins are not airborne and won’t hurt you. But I don’t think they would be good for the mushrooms and at any rate it’s bacteria, the kind of bacteria that we kill with pressure cookers. You don’t need or want it in your grow IMO.

Ok bet . You don’t feel like the cloth or screen will completely keep out the gnats?
How do you recommend me to go about my situation

Get better filters on your jars.

I don’t believe there getting through the filter.. Thick ass ez felt I seen the fly crawl under my ring completely in there . Not in the jar but between the threads . I believe there laying eggs in the threads and the larvae crawls through to the grains and feasts .
So I want the gnats to not touch my jars entirely
Tryp I have a dedicated basement for cultivating , the basement is in a guest house no one uses except a few chickens lol. it’s kept clean where I work. only problem is there’s a shit load of flies from the chickens.. I don’t eat down there only smoke and do cult work . Has cement floor and walls plastic ceiling

I personally wouldn't trust ez felt as a filter.
If they are getting past the threads and the seal then tighten your jars more.
They shouldnt be able to get past the canning seal.
My bet is the filter.
Plug all the cracks in your basement

Unfortunately I flip my lids for ease of opening . . That might b it
But if it was that wouldn’t more people share this problem. It seems no one gets maggots in there jars lol

If you're getting maggots in your jars, there's a serious leak with the gas exchange, or extremely insufficient sterilization...
Screwing your lids down tight? Got a picture of your jars/lids/filters?
Edit: just read that you're flipping lids, I suggest considering one piece plastic lids, but only for longevity... I flipped my metal lids for several months, so long as the rings are tight, they should be fine

Not this will work for you, but we have nats everywhere here. Can't leave anything in the sink. My first grow got maggots. Anyway here's a mosquito net I used for awhile.

Is there any literature on the forum about why fruit sizes might differ between flushes? My last two grows have had pretty average fruit sizes on the first flush and substantially bigger fruits on the second flush with the same general growing conditions (in terms of moisture levels, light exposure, FAE, etc.). I'm trying to figure out if this is typical or something I can troubleshoot to get the same large fruits on flush #1.

Caps I know this pc is working correctly and I’m using it properly. No doubt But I still got maggots in a tightly sealed one piece ball plastic lid . And with a metal lid tightly on . I’m gonna try putting the lid on the right way n see if my problems stop I should be able to tell within a few days . Pit I’m gonna pick up some no-see-ums screen tomorrow hopefully helps
I lost 21 jars so far. 😢
