Ok, I'm aware this question might sound bizarre, but I'm not sure. I was swimming in a lake today (people often do around here) and I realized afterwards that there is a fish consumption limit of 1-2 meals per month because of pesticides, specifically chlordane (which was banned in the late 80s for being dangerous). Chlordane basically doesn't degrade or dissolve so it stays in the water for a long time.
Also, chlordane binds to things like vermiculite and soil very easily.
Thing is, I handled my colonizing jars afterwards not really thinking about this after I dried off at home. I'm sure if there was chlordane or other chemicals on me they were minimal, but I'm wondering if this will pose a risk to my mushrooms.. Does anyone know either if the protective vermiculite layer could capture any potential introduced pesticides?
Once again I know this question may seem bizarre but I'm facepalming for not shower afterwards and just handling my jars.
Appreciate it guys
edit: and for those wondering, I swim here w my dog and so do many others, I didnt think much of it until afterwards

Question on refrigerator storage If you have several fruits maturing every day but not enough to run the dehydrator every day how long can you store in ziplock bag in the refrigerator?

I would put them in brown paper bags with a paper clip or tape to keep it closed. Plastic will cause your mush to get to moist and turn to mush. I’ve kept mine in the fridge for up to five days. The sooner you dry them the better though.

Thanks. I was thinking ziplock just to keep the air out. No worries about air exchange with paper bag?

I have been keeping some of mine in a ziplock bag in the fridge for a little less than a week and there has been no mushiness.

A paper bag suspended in front of a fan works for small amounts

A bit of air won’t hurt them. If you paper clip it or tape it shut it won’t get much airflow anyway. Guess ziplock works too, I just prefer paper for mushrooms.
Edit: you can pick up a pack of BPBs from Walmart or other stores for around $1 and it will last you a long time. Sometimes I’d even reuse my bags just to save paper lol. Paper clips are cheap to and they can double as pipe scrapers lol. Also if you ever hunt for mushrooms BPBs will come in handy.

thanks, is this b/c of the vermiculite layer (which the pesticide apparently can bind to) or some other factor?

Its because the pesticide isn't strong enough to do anything to the fish. I assumed your mushrooms will be fine, because for the most part they ignore what they don't use. As long as a decent amount of undiluted stuff didnt come into direct contact with the myc itll be fine.

Goddamn dehydrator went out on me last night when I'm at full throttle. No heat. I'm imagining it's the thermal fuse, which maybe has something to do with a faulty thermostatic sensor or something? I offered a relative my Presto unit for food stuff and he lives like three hours away and I'm about to bottleneck like a bastard... Gonna be a fun day. Really don't have the cash this week for a new unit so I think some atainless grates and my boxwood stove are about to become a dEhyDrAtor.

Motherfuck.
One of my tubs developed trich after the second flush. I have 64 tubs going and there is only so much time in a day so I got my 1 gallon sprayer of Moldex and misted the tub so I could deal with it later.
Sure enough, five tubs on their 2nd flush toast and one freshly put into fruiting conditions.
I garbage bagged the infected subs and hosed down the tubs with another 1 gallon sprayer I keep Simple Green in as its a cleaner/soap/fungicide/sanitizer so here is hoping the spore load in the air was not so bad. I am going to have to start exchanging the air in the basement and drop the RH if it continues.

Oh I'll definitely be taking pics of that monstrosity...
Also damn dude 64 tubs... I'm not sure I could manage manage that properly and I work from home lol. When I have gotten the green visitor, I haven't ever gotten any spread from it, but the air exchange is pretty minimal in here. ... Bummer, though.

I've never taken a dehydrator apart but as long as the element is intact it shouldn't be hard to simply bypass a limit switch (if that is the cause). My dehydrators are very simple, no dials or power settings or anything, just turn on when you plug it in. So they likely just have a fan, element, and thermal overload (limit) switch which I imagine most consumer grade dehydrators work this way and would be relatively easy to diag the problem.
Given that some of us run our dehydrators pretty fuckin hard it's easy to imagine a failed limit switch from running a little hot. I constantly have to clear mushroom flakes/dust out of the intake to keep it from clogging up and restricting airflow.
If you were to bypass a limit switch, I wouldn't run it like that long term but could get ya out of a pinch.

Inre Oreganic: Maybe I will try to bypass it... ( little worried it will overheat but maybe I shouldn't be?) I think I can get the few imminent pounds dry by staggering trays on an elevated platform by my woodstove but maybe I should rig that up just in case. Just don't want to buy a cheapo unit just because I'm stuck for cash when I can get something decent next week. Appreciate the suggestion. Could definitely do that. I sure wish Radio Shack was still a thing... I've found no less than a dozen reasons I'd visit one over the last few months if they did. Do people even know what those are now?! Omg I'm old AF!! *feels face and cringes* "look away!"...
Also, as suggested while I was posting this (though I appreciate the thought): fan drying leads to half dry fruits that will never rid themselves of enough moisture to store properly. I don't live in the desert.
