How often do you all change scalpel blades? I have been getting contams on every transfer lately and I think it's the blade even though I flame it.

I change it when it is a charred little twig of a blade barely hanging onto the handle. Thatโs if Iโm not using the spears.

Nah. I've literally been using the same blade for a solid year. The blade before this one I used for 2 years at least.
Pic of my old blade and my current blade when it was new

That was over a year ago! Here's that same blade today

I flame my blade so long itโs usually loose by the time the sessions over so Iโll usually just get one or two transfer sessions per.

Just bend it back best you can. Sooner or later it gets tempered and stays in the shape you need. Mine hasnt come loose since my first round with it. You can see in the second pic the zig zag in the blade haha

Not in my opinion. Mine is basically a fixed blade scalpel now
I havent purchased blades in probably close to 5 years no joke. Both blades I pictured were from a giveaway hosted by stareatclouds like 3 years ago at least

I always have pliers beside my hood specifically for straightening bent scalpel blades.

Looks good Ovoidhunter. Would you mind giving more details on spawning to the sterilized manure? Was colonization done in bags? Did you soawn open air?

I should scrape/clean them more often though, sometimes carbon explodes off of the blade when I cool it in a dish, black flakes shoot everywhere, lol.

Gizmo, Spawned them in open air and right now im 20/2 with them. The only reason I lost those tubs tho was because one was a clone that I only did two transfers so it must of had the cobweb riding with it and I didnt see it. The other was a clean culture but I packed the manure way too tight in the jar so it didn't properly sterilize or somethin. They're all colonized within a week and I never exceed a 1/3 ratio of spawn to sub. That probably helps.

I use a fresh blade and handle almost every session
I know its overkill, but the blades are dirt cheap and i do a batch of sterile #7 handles every time i make agar
I have a bacticinerator too so its triple overkill. Works great and cuts great every time though
I like to switch between the #15c for agar and #11 for cloning or cutting something

Blimey O'Reilly are use the same blade until it falls off. I don't see what more you can do than flame sterilise something

That works for sure. Bacticinerator even better. But i do a TON of agar (like 60-90 plates at a time, at least once a week), and i like the blade to be sharp each time. Those 15c blades are TINY
Ofc its overkill. Probably just a habit from doing other types of lab/medical work. Totally unnecessary
