FWIW, IME, grains overridden with endospores aren't easy to work with. The PC reduces a lot of them, but it doesn't kill them all. True sterilization is something like 1 particle per 1000000000? It's really just probabilities. THere's a reason why people throughout shroomery history preach that you have to inoculate grains immediately, and jars after a couple weeks should just be trashed and restarted.

Organic grain often has endospores added as an alternative to pesticide. I have found with such grain that often a single cycle is not enough and that bacteria can recover and become noticable in as little as a few days or as long as a few weeks as two weeks. When I started doing muda style bottles it was strange because you could see the bacteria pop up around some of the grains like little satellites. Became suddenly very easy to see what was happening.

When spawning such grain its my experience that you often cannot smell them, yet they will inhibit recovery enough for molds to move in. Sometimes a very high spawn ratio could help but not always. My solution was a two part sterilization which did the best job.

Also its worth noting that I stopped overnight soaking two years ago.

This is the first mention I've ever heard of "invisible contams." If an endospore is so damaged it can't reproduce, isn't it essentially dead? What effect do these have on growth if they are not reproducing?

Endospores germinate into bacteria, the bacteria reproduces and some of them become endospores when conditions deteriorate. A damaged endospore is perfectly capable of recovering but it does take time. When we "sterilize" we actually don't kill all the endospores. You would need to run an 8 hour PC cycle to do that. We damage them enough to provide a "window with which to colonize". But there is always a possibility that a couple can recover and start problems. Usually this means poor to no colonization of some grains which are then easy pickings for mold.

Most of the time I doubt people even realize this is happening. But it does. To fully kill all endospores you need to go to pretty extreme lengths. Incidentally this is why GLC is a terrible idea.

'Sterilizing' for 90 minutes gives a window of opportunity to get your grains colonized before surviving organisms can get a foothold.  It's not absolute sterilization, which would take up to 24 hours and ruin the grains.

These days I’m finding myself also concerned with the cry toxins those bacteria produce when they reproduce. It’s the cry toxin that is what shreds the insect carapace and allows the bacteria to be an effective pesticide. I don’t have any direct proof but I’m not convinced these toxins are harmless to the mycelium.

Good stuff^
Quick question, are unmodded plastic lids with a whole SFD underneath an actual thing?
I know some (like pasty) use unmodded lids or at least have done so before.
I just REALLY don't feel like putting holes in more lids and cutting up SFDs and yea just fuck all that. Also, somewhat loose unmodded lids scares me.
If I have to then I have to, just wanted a little input.

Why would you bother with a SFD if your lid is unmodified? It's not protecting anything there unless you have holes.

Because there would obviously be a gap in between the top of the threads and the lid... Plastic lids don't seal. It would protect the whole mouth while the lid pins it down in place.

I guess what I'm getting at is would that even offer enough GE?

This is the way I've been doing lids for years now. Works good and never had a SFD pop off this way, whereas the way I used to do it they would come off from time to time.

Im just feeling lazy but if a SFD under an unmodded lid would work that'd be cool. If I need to put a hole in the middle but I don't need to silicone anything, that could be cool too

Whatever is the least work

Yessir! I don't let them sit for more than 3 days, but idk the upper limit for time.

Yes it would provide enough GE, it's not an airtight seal. Your modded lid setup is dope, especially with the minor holes to help the silicone bond to itself.

Thanks. I would have posted my lid pictoral a while back but I just felt like it would get more hate than anything just because it is kind of a lot of work. Better quality tho IME

Is using a normal lid for spawn problematic that has a filter on it problematic for LC? If I just PCd it should I cover the filter with that same high temp silicone (name escaping me at the moment) that we use to make SFDs? The lid has a nicely snug injection port that I would like to use.

I was making a bunch of jars of LI and was like... maybe this will work?

This is what I do. A single 1/4” hole in the lid, whole SFD underneath. No problems thus far.

Also, all the talk about drying got me wondering, so I did some testing today:

00:00 - 96 grams fresh in the dehydrator
08:00 - 7.15 grams
10:00 - 7.18 grams

I’ve been running way longer than that, so it’s nice to know I can save some electricity.

maybe i fucked up the entire grow with bacteria from going g2g with bacterial shit, feeling paranoid now, want canopy

how many kilos of corn spawn do you need to get a canopy in a unmodfied tub

I managed to learn how to get spawn to fruiting status, but now efficient canopy and good pinsets still escape my. I'm experimenting with bigger tubs now thinking I went too small, here it is:

Hoping this will be the tub that brings big fruits

What about 12 and 16 hours? Did you keep going and stay at 7.18? I’ve had my weights jump up like that and then back down again. Weird.

I’ve been wanting to test during a day I’m home but all my grows mature during the week lol. I end up leaving for work during the time when final weight is reached and I can’t figure out if it’s an hour after I’m gone or 8 hours.

I had weight going up and back down by 0.05 grams, also go a bit up and stay there.
I would argue that it's a case of the scale's resolution being unnecessarily smaller than the scale's precision, but I leave it running for a couple more hours when it happens.

My slim experience, which is only three dehydrator cycles, has narrowed it down slightly for me.

My first run was 2 tray fulls in the dehydrator at 158 F for 6~7 hours. I checked a couple and they were cracker dry so I vacuum sealed them and put them up. Within a week they all had flex to them and lost the cracker dryness, my guess is they weren't all cracker dry to begin with and the left of moisture in the few fucked up the many.

The second run I ran 2 trays at 158 F for 10 hours. I tested the two biggest shrooms and they were cracker dry so I placed them all in a mason jar with a silica pack from beef jerky. For the next two weeks they were cracker dry every time I grabbed a few.

So my sweet spot is somewhere between 8 and 10 hours. I may run a single tray for 9 hours next time and see if it is a success.

I've heard there are bags that are porous, like for vegetables. Are the bags you seal nonporus?

I put silica packs in too, if the wifie hasn't ripped off all my packets!
Mine takes about 4 hrs...

Edit: So redid 140g RW for 4 hrs @ 160F to 125g crispy, tinkly...
Plus 4 silica packets.
