I’m still rocking the WBS I was using last year and it’s fucking jam. It’s a bit messy to prep but I got that mostly worked out, the knock points are killer and 4 quarts are plenty for a 66 quart mono.

I did WBS one time and it went fine.. on second usage, i grabbed the bag and it was full of bugs lesson learned.. i still have these little tiny black beetles in my house i will never get rid of
RGS is just so easy, and the seed has now sat for 2 years and no bugs.. so.. winner for me

I can’t imagine grain sitting for two years and I used to buy rye and wheat by the metric ton. In fact this last 11 month break is longest I’ve gone since starting in the hobby.

Residential LTL (single pallet) delivery murders prices. If you have a friend who works somewhere with a loading dock, that (shipping) price will be significantly cheaper.

Thanks that's great to hear! It's my second attempt and I think I need to wait a week or two right?

What brand of Wbs would you recommend?

Zeppelinthecat said: For people using oats for grain jars, what brand oats are y'all using? Im using producers pride but I'm starting to read bad experiences with that specific brand. Im wondering if some of the issues im having is from my oats.
same brand, and i am about to toss the rest of the bag to the birds or something. Same LC used on prepped wbs and oats. only the wbs ever recovered. The oats showed life after a week and i never spawned them. Most likely a fail in my prep with hydration/drying and then the added liquid from the LC didnt help any.
they work, and people have great results (think Bod) but im not trying to work that hard on grain prep.
just picked up 3 50# bags of winter wheat last night
I'm happy with
I've heard good things about that brand, might try that brand before I give up on oats and go back to wbs. What tek are you using for oats??
Well while we're running the generator for electricity I can answer.. Crackatoa's easy oats I'm real happy with this way.

The cheap Walmart wbs is great.
Just a white bag that says “wild bird seed” in red letters.
Pennington is pretty good too, it’s got a lot of millet.

I think sometimes a batch of oats just might have too many initial endospore forming bacteria present to be used for healthy spawn. I’ve gone through more than 100 jars of those producers pride oats and the only ones to fully colonize were the ones inoculated with li.

I could be wrong, but I don’t think brand recommendations are worth much from region to region. I’d imagine they outsource to local farmers a significant amount of what ends up in the bag.

Oats do tend do have a higher content of bacteria than other grains though

I think its the hulls that keep in endospore is the problem. I don't think its been confirmed they are inherently more dirty. The PC kills everything as long as you run it long enough and vent properly.

I had to get a new dehydrator today (old one died) and it only reaches 155 farenheit. Hot enough? Didn't want to make a new thread for a simple question

Thank you. Still learning new things all the time. After all these years. My last dehydrator didn't even have settings. I'll leave this one on the highest setting
I had to put some of my harvest in a brown paper bag in the fridge while I waited for stores to open to get the new dehydrator. Should be ok right?

Ok I can't find the reference and possibly this is debatable. But I set the dehydrator 140F for an hour, then crank to 160F till crispy.
Woo hoo, we have electricity again, A/C tonight!
