Proof of life
Thanks for checking in on me to those who did. I know the rest of you would just as soon see me dead now but shout out to psyche delics and tight lunchbox for making sure sirachi didn't kill me.
And shout out to sirachi for showing so much dedication to blowing my phone up every day to ask if I was arrested or not. And to Learyfan for not being done with me either.
I didn't think anybody really gave a shit about my filter plug design because it seemed like all I got was negativity, but I had not logged on to see that there had been a lot of positive comments made about it later on. I had stopped working on it, but I will start again. It will be much easier now that I have access to my own printers again. I also bought an FDM printer because I didn't at first realize how differently you must design for them. They kind of suck yo. Get an SLA!
I feel very much more welcomed here than I had. Thank you all who have been kind, I know I missed some people.

Well, think of it as an improvement. We can move on from murder mysteries to crtical design reviews.
Ah a design review in a mtg with a dozen engineers, head of the department and other designers can be a very sobering experience, not for the thin skinned!

Inkbirds are popular for species like pans that need them. Monos/unmodded with cubes are as easy as it gets. Flipping a lid is much quicker than setting up and dialing in timers and fog.

Like AKA said, great for pans. I got one in my martha. But its way too much for cubes. Get a mono, dial it in and you'll be perfect.

Once you start going with sensors and automation it all relies on that one little sensor. Maybe it's in a dumb spot that gets you a bad reading and makes your system just take an absolute dump on your project. Or maybe your system isn't consistent enough across the board to make any use of one single reading so it will always be fluctuating. It can be tricky stuff.

I have an inkbird that was given to me a few years back, I still haven’t found a need for it yet.

Timers work fine. Pretty much only use the inkbird for temp now

Aka, I threw away all of my substrates after the first flush my last go with bulk. I feel like you get most of the yeild possible on a first flush.
I'm running 12 16 quart substrates in 58q tubs now. I ran a test tub at the same ratio and got 5.8oz that times 12 is about 70oz of estimated yeild. This is the same method I used to calculate my last yeild of 20oz. Also the culture is pretty isolated so its easy to estimate and ive been operating with a near zero contam rate. Im 12 for 12 rn. Knock on wood.

I like to automate stuff. Partly because I am a tinkerer, partly because I am a showoff. I don't rely on it though, meaning, I consider it stacking the deck. This is a mantra I have echoed repeatedly since before I came here:
Stack the deck in your favor.
If it costs little, takes little time, and improves your odds by 1%, do it. All those 1%s add up. Casinos make more money than almost any other business, and this is important: they do it by totaling up all these super slim margins that go in their favor. I won't over explain but think on that. It is not original to me so don't think I am bragging about ME when I say that is some life changing, profound shit that I just dropped.
In blackjack, the odds favor the house by one thing only: The house wins in a tie. You cannot ever beat the house because no matter how much you win, if you play long enough the house always wins.
So that is why I automate. When I am distracted, drunk, whatever - I have a second set of eyes on my project. I trust the automation about as much as I trust a thief. But, it has saved me more than once when circumstances I could not control kept me from being where I wanted to be when I needed to be there. Like, you get a flat tire, but your automation does your misting on time anyway, for example.
I do agree with Pasty, that it is overkill for most cubes, but I also would do it if buying a device isn't putting you in any kind of a bind. I build Arduino shit to do my dirty work, but don't buy the cheapest sensor you possibly can. There is a humidity and temp sensor available, but don't use it. Use a dedicated rh sensor and a dedicated temp sensor. There is plenty of code sketches available at Github so there is no reason to re-invent the wheel.
Automate but verify, I say. Set it up but every time it cycles, check to see that it does it properly. When you can't be there, check on it as soon as you can be.

I just want to point out automation is pretty much useless when you’re just starting out. Once you’ve got a feel for what the conditions should be then it could be helpful if you’re not able to maintain them on their own.
