so i started soaking some WBS the other day intending to load and PC last night...i forgot about it
by the time i get to it today, it'll have been about 46 hours
should I call home and ask my girl to dump it into a colander or screen now cutting down that soak time, or will it be cool for me to wait till i get back to it tonight?

For no stink, sprout, or clump... 12 hour soak, 24 hour dry.

due to the endospore thing?

Mad Season said: Many agree that soaking longer causes more endospores than was previously there, contrary to the old information. Don't need to remove floaters, or even add gypsum, haven't used it in spawn for many years now.
This is correct. By the way, it's not just endospores that multiply by 2 every two hours either. Endospores are the biggest threat to our sterilization cycles due to their extremely tough exoskeleton.
Some endospores even survive sterilization everytime, but are so knocked back by sterilization that they cannot recover before heathy cultures inoculated in a timely fashion come through, and consume them. This is why/how if a jar is sterilized, and left uninoculated for a month, or two that bacteria, and mold begin to grow.
Soaking for 24 hours isn't a deal breaker. It's a step in the wrong direction, though, if the goal is to produce sterilized (or as close as is humanly possible to achieve actual sterilization) grain mediums. The longer grains are soaked, the higher the favor is given to endospores to survive the sterilization process is all. Any soaking over 48-72 hours is a deal breaker. Depending on ambient temperature.

RogerRabbit said: You shouldn't soak any grains for 48 hours. We've learned that the hard way. They will turn rancid. In addition, most bacterial endospores that germinate begin to make new endospores within a few hours, so you can easily end up with more bacteria than you started with, many of which can survive the pressure cooker. Soak 24 hours max. Boiling the grains before loading the jars will add the extra moisture, but remember, slightly dry grains colonize much faster. You don't want them at 100% capacity. RR

Soak for 48 hours and then pour boiling water over them as they are draining or check out pinpornproducers wheat prep
its just the last of the wbs i have, dont wanna just dump it if its usable
you're tag speaks for you, I'm more curious as to why you wouldn't?
she just said it wasn't so bad as far as smell, maybe it was closer to 10pm lol
**posted before i seen you added to yours mush aside from the stink then?

It smells because of fermentation, fermentation equals bacteria. Bacteria doubles every hour, you will have 2² bacteria after 2 hours, 2³ after 3, etc. The PC will kill almost all of it, I found when I let my rye soak for too long and it got to fermenting/stinking I always had contamination issues.
Under ideal conditions, many types of bacteria can double every 20 minutes. Potentially, one bacteria can multiply to more than 30,000 in five hours and to more than 16 million in eight hours. Most are killed, but are all of them?

I read somewhere that if your grains are too bacterial they can produce fungicides that persist even through pc cycles, to what degree I’m not sure. Could be fine since your grains are likely treated with fungicides and pesticides anyways unless they’re organic, in which case they’re probably treated with bacteria. I’d just toss and start over if it was me.

so might not be a bad idea with this batch to add the quarters to reach 18psi and go for 2hr at pressure?
i usually go for 2hr at pressure for all my grain choices anyways

Why not just prep new grain, I mean the cost in terms of time and materials is much less to start over when compared to the possible fuckery that will take place if you have contamination issues further down the line.

Rinse it in hot water really well until water runs clean, maybe even bring to a quick boil and dump so it can steam dry then PC at 15+ for at least 2hrs.
If you are dead set on using it, that may help, but if it's not a lot of grain you might as well start over.
