The loose coir in the garden section is generally already hydrated to field capacity or near it. The loose stuff in the pet section is pretty dry.

I always heard you should stay away from loose coir because some brands contain trich.

Ever walk away from your SAB and just think "Fuck..." I was feeling brave and and stuck 10 quart jars in my 66qt SAB, one master & 9 receivers. Very tight squeeze. I thought if I went slow I'd be able to do it smoothly... did I fuck! Things were rattling, lids were sliding off between jars, I'm kinda sure I didn't pass my arms over any open jars but crap that didn't go well.
How many do you all get done in your SABs?

I think I’m rocking a 66 right now as well. Much smaller than my old 110 I know that. I do 7 jars and an LI donor. It’s tight for sure but I just slip the receiver jars out an arm hole after I tighter their lids so it gets easier pretty quickly.

I haven't updated mine with 6" holes, feeding the quarts through my current 4" holes is a pain. Incentive to get a bigger one I suppose. Well fingers crossed I'll find out soon enough. Thinking of building one from scratch, like a furniture piece.

I've seen some dope large SABs built with 2x4s and plexi.
If I was gonna be rocking a SAB again for any amount of time that's what I'd do.

Here's something super random:

I put spores into grain that I didn't sterilize (so definitely contaminated) but this thing is growing out of control and I'm going to end up cutting it up and putting on some agar plates just to see if it will survive further.
I think it's hilarious if nothing else, but I can't believe it's doing so well. Any thoughts?

There might be cube myc in there but definitely there are multiple types of mold and probably bacteria. I see pink so I would highly recommend not putting it to agar as some pink molds are bad hombres

Any idea how pink molds act on agar? I usually see pretty distinct bacteria behavior on them (PDA and MEA at least).

I recently got a cooking thermometer for pasteurizing sub and figured I’d put some results up for anybody who doesn’t have one or is sketched about pasteurizing like I was.
Pouring just below boiling water into a five gallon bucket with half a brick of coir like I always have is basically perfect pasteurization. It was in the 160s for a few hours. I just set a piece of cardboard on top since I don’t have a lid.
Right now I’ve got a couple quart jars of manure in an instant pot set to “keep warm”. I’d read that this works but always opted for sterilized jars instead. About an hour and a half in and it seems to be holding at 158f. The water is about 2/3s up the jars.
Basically it’s much easier than I expected.

Currently dialing in my flow hood. Is it an issue if there are spots that have very slightly fast or slower flow? Or is that normal?
For example, Here's the flow in the middle:

Here's on the outside about an inch from the edge:

Also, how's the flow look? Do I need to dial it back anymore?

Looks fine to me. I'd be more concerned with the PM2.5 and PM10 air quality and whatnot, as long as your filters are good you should be good to go.

I also like to abuse my instant pot. You might already know all of this but I'll write it down in case it is helpful to someone. "keep warm" reacts to the less-normal-more setting, I've measured it before and got 60C (140F), 66C (150F) and 78C (172F) for hours on end, filling it up with water helps keep the temperature very stable, the middle one works pretty well for sous-vide ribs. You can get about 88C (190F) with "slow cook" less. Mine also has a milk pasteurizing setting for yogurt which keeps 71~83C (160~180F)

What brand?
Mine is farberware and it’s just got presets. I don’t think it has adjustable setting but I should look into it. There’s just like 10 presets, keep warm, and timer settings.
I just spawned the tubs with the manure, definitely smells 10x worse being slow cooked and sitting overnight then it does sterilized.

Instant Pot brand, those are just different preset programs.
