Haha it's more complicated but works well honestly.
Used to weigh out weed and shit in a similar method when I didnt have a scale with me.

Well I mean I could make a card scale :lmao2: I wasn’t tryna do all that though forreal but if you could clarify that pencil and nickel idea a bit more (couldn’t really visualize it) I might do that

Hold the pencil by the string tied around the center. Put a nickel in a bag (bag 1) on one end a certain distance from the center (let's say the eraser end). Then, if you hang another bag (bag 2) on the lead point end with the same mass (i.e. same kind of bag) and same distance from the center as your bag with a nickel the pencil will only be perfectly parallel with the ground (and perpendicular to the string) when the mass is equal in bag 2 as the nickel in bag 1. Thus the agar powder in bag 2 will equal 5 grams. Repeat once more for 10g of agar.

Here is a recipe I used back on the day with no scale. I don’t remember specifics about plates but I remember it thickened and myc grew fine on them lol.
Agar mix - 1tsp LME. 2 1/2 tsp agar powder. 250ml water. 10 plates

I’m doing about 50 smaller than normal plates. Idk the exact dimensions but I have a pic of the label in my gallery somewhere. I have a 500ml bottle and I like to use the whole thing just so I don’t have to be constantly pouring agar. So I guess just double? I’m not worried about how many plates I get it’s going to be at least 30 I just need to properly ratio the agar going into them, so I guess I’ll just double you’re measurements there. Thanks!

Whatever you end up doing you can boil the mix and pour a test plate before pressure cooking, let it cool and see if it settles to the right firmness, then adjust the water (add water or boil water off) until it's right.

You could just use brf paste if you’ve got brf too.

So I accidently poured too much LC into 1 of my jar (~50 ml LC). I've tried shaking it to redistribute the liquid but it still looks overly wet. Any way I can fix this?

You could drain it out in the SAB.
I’ve used that much before and it worked ok but I kept shaking it a few times a day. I also stored the jar in its side to try and spread the lc out more.
It took a little longer but worked. It kinda grew as a thin fuzz all over then gradually thickened instead of the way myc normally grows in one place and spreads out.

I laid my jar on its side once when I poured too much li. The larger surface area worked to form a sheet of millet that kinda trapped the liquid there and after a day or two when it kinda solidified I turned it upright and it all stayed on that side of the jar. The rest of the WBS colonized well and I was able to keep that super wet part separated when I spawned the jar.

How can I roughly measure agar without a scale? Mine grew legs and left me and I need to pour plates today. I was thinking using a table spoon? I use a 500ml media bottle and have usually used 7g agar+10g lme. Anyone have any suggestions on how to get this measured? It obviously isn’t too important to be completely accurate I just don’t want to waste agar by fucking it up the first time, breads real tight rn.

If you’re using powdered agar and don’t have a scale, a level tsp (5ml) is roughly 2.5 grams

Do any of you guys use loose coir? I can't find bricks in this country so I'm just buying bags that are ostensibly for potting soil. They seem to take a lot less water in terms of weight than what I see recommended for bricks.

I’ve never bought it but there’s usually a ton at the end of the 11lb bricks and it works fine. I bust mine up really well these days anyhow to avoid dry chunks.

But do you find that it takes less water? I've been using ratios that I see here and I always have to dump in more coir or verm because it comes out sodden

I’d assume nearly all the water gets pressed out of the bricks but idk about the loose stuff

Hey Gastro I am using a bulked coir sometimes and it definitely takes far less water. I have been adding a small amount of water, mix it with a giant spoon, and squeeze test it for field capacity. So far that has worked, but I don't think you could trust any ratio because the amount of water in the loose coir could vary widely. It already varies a little with the bricks and those are super compressed and dry.

I just eyeball everything so I’m not sure. Usually these days I dump a little less boiling water in then I need and let it sit and cook for a couple hours, then I add cold water and mix it in until it’s field cap. That way I don’t have to wait an extra five hours for it to cool off enough to use.
