Brf works, and grain soak water works I know for sure. Idk about the molasses but the other two options are good alternatives.

Yeah, I'm using BRF agar right now, I used to use honey, potato, or maple syrup to make agar, changing it up every run of plates or so.

BSM is awesome and works very well.
Great thing about this hobby is the ability to explore possibilities. Really you can make agar out of just about anything. Blend some grass up and I'm sure you'll get some growth.
When attempting to do cordy's a few years ago I made cricket agar from blended crickets.
Just mess around with ratios until you find a nute and stiffness ratio you like. Do 7g malt and 3g BSM for a total of 10g nutes per 20 plates.
Or if you want a less strong recipe shoot for 7g total nutes. Like 5g malt and 2g BSM

Do it, that sounds positively quaint Although, a quick skim of a search shows that the leaves/shoots of mulberry have antifungal compounds: https://www.jircas.go.jp/sites/default/files/publication/jarq/16-2-119-124_0.pdf
Berry extract that has been cooked will probably be fine though. make some berry juice agar!

I also have access to coconut sugar- maybe I'll try making agar with that too?

The coconut sugar? I got a big bag of it a while back, for some recipe, and haven't really used much of it. If you mean the mulberries, well, they're free- just gotta shake a tree.

Phrontist said: First time going agar to grain. Noc’d two jars with Avery Albino and another two with TOC (mush love to justanoob ). Left them in a closet while I was gone for a week, came home today and found this:

Weird that one of each is at 90% or so, while the other two are 20%? They look a bit hazy to me overall, but up close it seems like it’s all mycelium. Any opinions?
Anyone? All opinions welcome.
I went ahead and shook those two jars. Just figured if there’s contamination I need to worry about, they won’t bounce back in 24-48 hours.

They will say it will be the same. I have done it, but never side by side. But I was happier with HPOO/coco/verm mix.

yeah, poo doesnt yield more. I used to think it made them more potent but I highly doubt that as well. all my early grows were done with hpoo

its not better but it is easier because u dont have to pasteurize it which has a learning curve of its own

I dont understand it tho people told me I would get mold because I wasnt pasturizing. I've just been cooking it at 15 psi for 2 hours then its ready to go. I didnt lose a single one of my 11 tubs.

In either case, Substrate OR Casing Layer..... You pasteurize. The only thing you sterilize is the substance you are going to inoculate and use as your spawn. Also, you Pasteurize to destroy competitive molds while leaving the beneficial microorganisms behind. You don't want to Destroy everything so that Mycelium "uses it for food". - https://www.shroomery.org/forums/showflat.php/Number/13101091#13101091

Edit: actually now that the coffee is kicking in...this really isn't on point.

Coir? Ya those people are wrong. I grew with nothing but sterilized coir for like 2yrs. Now I just use tap water, hydrate and spawn.
For what it's worth the first and really only time I grew bunk shrooms I used hpoo.
Edit:wait, you sterilized poo and spawned with it no mold?

Can't wait to show you all my manure grows... haven't posted pics of the substrate because I don't want some wiseass to come on and say they're contaminated... mycelium growing fast and aggressive even with the higher density of the sub as compared with coir-verm.
