And that's what I'm talkin about. This hobby is confusing and difficult enough when just starting out.

I would say clean inoculant should colonize within 2 weeks, but some cultures are slow
Really if it takes more than a month it's definitely toast, but anything less may still be good, just slow if it takes over 2 weeks.
yup

All these pics of plastic jar lids make me fuckin' envious. We dont get Ball brand mason jars here, the local manufacturer of jars only makes metal lids. I have half a 15l bucket full of old lids and rings rusting away.

A grain jar should take about a week to colonize if you are using clean inoculate. Should be plenty of ge available.
I really hate cultivating in the winter where the average temp hovers at 16C-18C in my room, and I cant afford to heat it more than that. Most of my grain takes 4-6 weeks, sometimes more, to hit 100% . But to be honest I have never ever seen colonisation times less than 3 weeks in my whole myco endeavouring career.
I think I need to invest in making some sort of warm incubator.

A noob tossing jars because mushboy said xyz about colonization times with clean inoculate is a hypothetical at best. If they can figure out the word clean inoculate they can figure out not to toss uncolonized jars. If some just fool hardy noob tossed jars without asking or reading further that's part of learning.
Most noobs do shit like this. Noobs use syringes. Those take a week sometimes just to germinate. Which is plastered on every syringe based noob tek.

If you shake the hell out of your jars u can usually speed the colonization times up. When dropping wedges. But 2 week is the average for me as well

my LCs usually take 4-8 days to hit 100% in a 75 degree room
a2g can be similar, or up to 2 weeks in same room
in a 65 degree room a2g can take 3 weeks or more

Bru I can't even get the 2-part lids down here. I have these skeeetchy ass regular jar lids that are technically air tight but I feel they could very easily get warped to the point of uselessness. Funny enough I found a store that sells the bell jar lids, just not the bands. And when I asked where to get the bands all I got was a "no se seรฑor"

Damn, all this talk of LCs is making me sad ๐๐ I went through all my boxes today trying to find my old LC, which I'm thinking that if I can find it it's possibly still viable-- when I had a microscope, I looked at it, and it was clean and happy. I shook it every month for like 2 years before I had to store it somewhere to move- now it's vanished!

If they do warp and become non-airtight you would have the equivalent to the plastic lids which work perfectly. The only drawback to them is I've heard of one instance where bugs got in. But I'll continue to take that chance.

Oh boy, some of the plates I put spores to are starting to show some kind of growth- it's not quite what I remember myc looking like, but I'll give it a few days so it's easier to play "myc or mold" lol
Addendum:
I have a 3d printer. I don't have plastic that's PCable. Is there anything plastic I can make that would be good for myc work short of my pipe dream of a sealed SAB (a plastic tote, completely sealed, with an airlock and a set of remotely-controlled arms inside controlled either electronically, or preferably, with a master/slave setup, as well as tools made specifically for the arms- I've been working on the blueprints for this lately, haha- but it is a long way off, and as I said, a pipe dream)?

I will not modify a single lid again. I have been doing 7 jar spawn runs trying to narrow down random ass contams I've been pulling in. I've got 18 jars contaminated out of 35. All different inoc methods, 5 different agar dishes, and 2 different grain preps. All but 2 of the jars contamed are modded with an sfd,the two contamed unmodded lids were marked as I bumped the box while innoculating. All surviving jars have unmodded lids.
I modded my lids with an 1/8 inch drill bit, rtv, nickel sized sfds. The kids were prepped with 60 grit sand paper then cleaned with iso. I put a bead of rtv around the sfd and pressed it down, then after it dried used a paint brush to spread rtv 1/8 over the edge of the filter and out onto the lid. I'm recycling them all an buying all unmodded lids asap maybe all sfds I bought were bunk or fakes but in modded works so why mess with it.
