That's good advice, once these lids run their course I'm probably going to run unmodified. The arts and crafts required to make lids is time consuming.

I'm just using polyfil. Hammer a screwdriver through the lid, twist and stuff. No problem.

Is there a reason polyfill fell out of favour? I've still got the 2 piece metal lids with polyfill. But i never have more than 20-25 jars going at any one time

People like being fancy. Sfd lids look fancy. Poly looks ... kinda old school.
Unmodded works fine. So does tyvek with mp tape. Lids are the easiest but most important part of a jar staying sterile. Why people like to mod them and increase potential for failure is beyond me but that's just my opinion.

Interesting. I know at one point some people were saying some negative stuff about unmodded lids and contams so I stayed away. But I guess that was more an issue of user error.
How loose/tight do you want them while colonizing?

I just screw till the threads barely start to catch. A grain jar should take about a week to colonize if you are using clean inoculate. Should be plenty of ge available.

For my recent run of lids, I used a Dremel to put a quarter inch or so hole in the lid, smoothed the edges of the hole, and slapped a layer of MP tape on either side of the lid. My standard procedure used to be very similar, but with a knife or scissors instead of the Dremel, which made very rough holes and led to the tape getting holes in it.

Wow, thats really cool to know. So you just use regular unmodified lids screwed on ever so slightly loosely? You probably have to be careful with that when taking them out of the PC and not grip them by the lid and have them fall/open, this happened to me a couple of times where I didnt screw the lids tight.

A week to colonize? Come on bro. Maybe from LC but I call bs on wedge drops taking you a week to see full colonization.
Fastest culture I have takes just about 2 weeks from wedge and I'm on a constant 2 week cycle.
I seriously doubt you have shit that's colonizing in a week unless you're using LC/LI.

I said clean inoculate not a wedge. Otherwise I'd say a wedge.
Let me rephrase. G2g, lc, li, hell just about anything besides spores or a wedge should take a week.
A wedge can also colonize in about a week if you cut it up. You can colonize a quart in a week with no filter easily.
No bs sorry.

I liked pint masters for how fast they could colonize with a wedge. I would often do the tic tag toe drop to a pint of millet and be fully colonized in 5-7 days, rarely did they need a shake.
That being said I’ve also struggled with smaller/fewer wedges to larger masters. That shit can be frustrating for real.

Specification man. All I'm sayin
Some noob sees "clean inoculant should colonize in a week"
Looks at their own jars taking longer than a week and tosses them.
I would say clean inoculant should colonize within 2 weeks, but some cultures are slow
Really if it takes more than a month it's definitely toast, but anything less may still be good, just slow if it takes over 2 weeks.

I remember when I first started growing I'd see people saying their jars colonize in 7-10 days so I always thought I was doing something wrong lol.
It took me a little while to realize they were talking about after a G2G or liquid innoc. I love the way of the liquid
