Lots of people mix it in with their coir. It adds volume to a substrate and provides water. I only use it when I'm low on coir.

So someone posted about celltreats sample program, I took it as an opportunity to get a few tubes for slants to play with. I asked for a sample of polypropelene centrifuge tubes and much to my surprise they sent me a bag of 25. I was hoping I could reuse them but unfortunately the lids are hdpe according to the website.. ooopppss atleast they came sterile.
So how would on go about making master slants from these? PC some sticks in a jar and place them in the tube with flamed tweezers? Or maybe boil up the water for agar with some sawdust in it.

Oh well that sucks, I think I have the same ones coming.
Although I’m planning on only using them for cultures I want to keep for a long time so I guess reusing them isn’t important.

I’ve been at it for 30-some years now and I still get the same effects at the same dosages as way back when. The only time I’ve ever dealt with tolerance was at the tail end of 3 straight days (72 hours nonstop) tripping.
I think there are a ton of effects that are highly subjective and dependent on set and setting, as compared to maybe a handful that are reliable markers, and they vary between individuals. It’s easy to get swept up in any of these effects when they hit you in a certain way, or to be let down when specific expectations aren’t met, which leads to wild swings in “potency” and “effectiveness” claims.

The standard recipe for potato agar plates, oat jars, and coco coir shoeboxes is still the standard, right? Just making sure stuff was still what it was when I last was active :p
Edit: also: I have plates that have been stored at room temp, sealed, for a year- I can add pics later- they don't look too bad. Think I can use them as long as they're not contaminated?

Well I realize this isn't the place for such discussions, But I'd really like to pick yer brain, mostly about ego death. Maybe there's a more suitable thread somewhere...

Oats are now hated by many as a contam harborer. Milo, Millet and Wheat is in. Or all together as WBS of course...
Agar recipes standard is fine, many new recipes out there its wild. I'm just a standard MEA guy myself.
I'd make new plates I bet they have dried out a bit even sealed.

Well I've got most of a 40 lb bag of oats, I'll at least give it a try; as for the plates, I'm not talking about unpopulated plates- the ones I have have the mycelium of the stuff I was growing on them. They're just over 2 years old at this point...
The one marked "KO4" is a king oyster, and the other two are cubes.

Well the mycelium is old as fuck now it it would probably not be vigorous if you can reanimate it on new agar plates. Was it at least stored in a fridge, that slows down the aging. If its all you got it's all you got I guess. The pastypin one looks like it's your best shot.

Nope, they were stored at room temperature. I also have an LC jar somewhere (I have to find it) but it was also stored at room temp. I'm also ordering more spore syringes, and I have spore prints *somewhere* but I really don't know where.

That LC is toast for sure.
Since you are an agar experienced folk you should order prints instead of syringes. Syringes just complicate inoculation on agar, much prefer a print to inoc a plate personally.

It looks like spore prints are more expensive than spore syringes... I might do this if I can find some at the same price or lower than where I found syringes.

Yes they are usually around $40 because you can make 5+ syringes from a print Or streak hundreds of plates.

Aha, but I only need to get a single plate to bloom for each variety- after that I can do agar to agar and propagate mycelium as necessary :p

I'm not really starting so much as restarting :p When I *started* started, I used a friend's syringe because they failed at the PFTek method- I was successful and then kinda jumped right into it. Still used the syringe to start plates, because all the PFTek cakes started getting funky at the end, and I didn't trust the fruits off of them to have noncontammed spores.
