word on the street is producers pride oats are way bacterial. Any truth to that?
Because thats what I've been using 
according to the person I heard this from: "organic oats/grain use bacteria in lieu of pesticide, so you want non-organic oats"

Why even bother with oats? Wheat is prepared exactly the same way but with a shorter dry time. It's cheap, it looks better when colonized (I find oats always looked like it was off) and is so much better to work with. Oats is apparently inherently bacterial due to the husk. I switched from oats and I'm glad that I did, Nate converted me.

well shucks, you make the choice sound obvious 
Quicker dry time is a very attractive trait in itself. Whats your preferred prep method for wheat, or can i just do innocuoles method/treat them like oats?

Idk iv used oats, milo, wheat, with pretty much the same results. Granted I struggled with contamination issues when I first started and I was using wheat, I wanted it to be the grain but I later found out it was my procedure. And if PCing doesn't kill everything how can I have oat jars still in the pc for over a month now with nothing growing on them. I never took any grains out and scoped them but they look fine, not wet or slimy looking, no mold or anything else for that matter. I personally think its got alot to do with moisture, if you don't get them dry you will run into problems.

Have you used that recipe before? I can't point you to a post, but I've seen a few that say grain to water ratio for no prep should be 2:1. I've made lots of no prep millet bags with 2L millet and 1L water, they came out great.

Have you tried wheat with a no prep method? I use no prep with millet ($18 for 50lbs) and love it. But if wheat is cheaper I'd switch, only if it can be made with no prep. I'm never going back to boiling/soaking/drying grains.

no prep, like you just put a certain amount of water in the jar with the grain and PC or what?
I think wheat goes for 12-15 bucks a sack around here
been meaning to try millet for ages

in my mind the size of millet is its appealing quality. more knock points per same volume. but maybe im wrong

Nate has a thread about prep, basically the exact same as oats with hydrating until the starch is ~80% gone, I dry for an hour or 2 and it's gtg.
I believe it was Nate that referenced some information regarding bacterial colonies that reside between the kernel and the husk, making oats particularly difficult at times to properly sterilize.

@ sponge...No I've always prepped my grains by boiling, I enjoy the entire process of cultivation, I find it meditative so I doubt that I'll skip that step anytime soon.
I also really like working with wheat, especially because I was accustomed to prepping oats and this is quite similar so the transition was natural. Wheat just looks so nice when it's colonized, you can easily spot when shit has gone bad, unlike oats.

Hm, I get my grain pretty dry after simmering but I sure don't leave it for two hours.
Like the outside is totally dry to the touch? Mines almost always a little damp, not wet though. y'Think thats been fuckin me? That'd be funny

Yup, nice and dry. If you're not getting oats dry to touch it doesn't perform, ime.
I love wheat, it's very satisfying to prep. When I say up to 2 hours it's just because I haven't got to it because I was busy, it's usually gtg by an hour if not less.
When I saw my first batch colonizing I was like " fuck yeah, fuck oats" and I haven't changed my mind.

I am not loving what's happening to my trays.
Same tray 4 days apart:
  
I picked that fruit that didn't open up, it felt extra hollow, dry and sticky  .
Another tray going south 6.24 / 6.27 / 7.1 :
   
Is it just me or is this really slow growth for 1 week?
I was really looking for a nice haul with this pinset.
Would you scrap the whole thing or ride it out another week?

Looks like most of them aborted. I’ve been having problems with this too due to the heat lately. Seems like even the low 80s is too much for some types.

Definitely could be the heat, it hits 30C/85F most afternoons.
So what do you do? Just not grow in the summer?
