Yes what a great story! And it indicates pretty clearly the kind of rabbithole even buying a simple pc can become
So what better way to defeat senseless regulations than going for custom built and big. This thing pays for itself anyway over time.
To sterilize three 1 liter jars takes 2,5 hrs bc of shitty pressure nowhere near 15 psi and gas is getting expensive here too. If I can put 30 jars (or more?) in a steamer at once that would be huge for us and open up tons of possibilities with new projects and perhaps edibles too

I'm sort of in the same boat with electric AAs. I plan on getting a couple 75x but they won't ship to Canada because they don't meet Canadian electrical standards,so I'll be using shipito to get them. This may be helpful to other Canadian's reading this thread:

Fuck gloves are expensive now. 19 dollars for a pack of 100 is the cheapest I could find on amazon.

Luckyyy. Though you have to deal with some serious heat I guess so it evens out. I used to work at a place with gloves and I'd pocket a handful every day lol. I grew for a couple years without ever buying a glove.

Go without gloves I got a case a few months before everything went to hell and have only used a few pairs out of the first box lol. I mainly use them for handling chemicals cleaning and such, but rarely for mycology work.

Harbor freight is the only place to get gloves. They have been back in stock lately. They were like 7.99 for the ol' blue 5 mil gloves but I heard they were going to raise prices.

All the 5 mil are all in store only. It has an add to cart option on some 3 mil but when I click it my cart icon in the corner goes from 0 to -1 . The closest harbor freight is an hour and a half out so I’ll probably have to check somewhere else lol.

I'm with MH5109... I got some gloves in before covid, but since have gone naked... it's a bit of a mindfuck but that was the only hurdle I had.... it makes you more cautious about hand placement and how much extra motions you do when you feel "protected"...

Almost every SAB session the tip of the index finger of the glove melts and sticks to my fingernail because of how I hold the scalpel to the flame. Not sure if going gloveless will improve things or make them worse.

Ugh... can someone help me out. I nocc'd up 5 petris with an APE swab 8 days ago. Never cultivated APE before, i know pasty mentioned getting it to germinate is a pain in the ass. But anyway, 3 plates have done nothing at all, one had penicillium on the streak and the other has what's pictured below.
All five were tic tac toe'd whilst rotating the swab.
Can anyone tell me what's growing on the plate pictured below? There are very fine wisps of brilliant white towards the center. The optimist in me wants to believe it's just really thin myc but if someone could confirm or deny that would be appreciated.

Doesn’t look like myc to me. The only ape myc I’ve seen so far has been very white and cottony but I was lucky enough to get a live culture from someone. I’ve heard that leaving the tip of the swab buried in the agar can help germination

I have another swab that I'll try, I was just being hopeful. I suppose it won't hurt to leave it sitting and see what it does. Might make my agar a bit softer next time. A live culture would've been nice 😂

Ya that's mold.
When you swipe a swab just quickly swipe. Imo Tic tac toe while rotating sounds neat but all that motion over exposed media is how you contaminate. Also wetting the tip of the swab with STERILE water can help.

Lol, I do like the emphasis on sterile, but I suppose history has proven it a necessity. I'll use the other swab to do another 3/4 plates. I've read a lot of people cut a bit off and press it into the agar. So, mushboy, I'll give your recommendation a go and maybe cut a piece of the swab into the last two. I don't need it to be clean really, just transferable. Honestly, up until now I've been using the same 2 prints for three years, dying to give this APE and an RW I got recently a go
BTW - can you identify the mold? Gonna make notes and add it to the list.

About to run my AA 921 for the first time. On my presto 23qt I taped 3 quarters to the weight to run around 17psi silently. Is it possible to do this with the AA 921? I really like the fact that I lose much less water per cycle and it makes no noise.

Ya I taped 70 cents to my rocker.
20psi at the lowest heat setting. I can do many many cycles on the same batch of water.
