Good point, PID is a must. If you have a 4500 or 5500watt element you can dial that fucker back to 60% and still maintain temperature. 24 hours full bore is a definite fireazard.

I'm a mouth breathing shit knuckle when it comes to wiring electronics so I'm going to get the one from bubba's barrel's, but should you not have to breathe out of your mouth like I do on this subject then I'd recommend wiring something less expensive.

Plastic 55gal drum

No issues with temps in your plastic drum?

Nope: and it gets used lol

No autofill necessary,no pressure correct: so little steam escapes that its negligible... single drum, water heater element and a cord: its REALLY that simple

It's not a waste, a cheap 120v element does quite nicely at keeping it where it needs to be... I've run as many as 7-8 cycles without adding water... idk how much a PID runs, but its really not necessary, and would likely not disengage often/for long

throw that bowed out pc away man aluminum gets harder when it bends so now your pc resists pressure in a different way around that area. Sudden release of 5 gallons of 15 psi steam aint no fun.

Maybe not at 120v but 220v@5500 watts I'd want a PID for sure.

Why buy a larger element for more money just to spend money dialing it back? Its 240v... 120/240 people

It gets dialed back once temperature is reached. The reason for a more powerful element is
1. to get up to temp quicker, cut down run time,
2. If you're running it in a steam generator that supplies a large sterilizing vessel you need higher energy output.

If you're doing an all in one steamer in a drum it's not really necessary but if you're filling a 4x4x3 bin with 150-200 bags inside you need more, or if that steamer is supplying steam to a few 55 gal drums as apposed to just one....you see what I'm saying.

Yeah 240, lol. My bad. Shit gets scrambled when you vape and then try to type intelligible shit on your phone.

Grower goes over it in this video, he even mentions using 2 elements in a 30 gal generator.

I love you ol Caps you're alright in my book. I have a 55 gal steamer too. I use it for pasteurization only though. Its 240v 5500w PID controlled so i can keep the interior steamed at 170 degrees perfectly. 120v doesnt really have the mustard to keep up with a temp controller because it waits for the temp to fall and kicks on and it would take x times longer to heat up wattage wise obviously.

lemme know if you have any qs about it. It's not currently wired up because I'm not doing pasteurization currently, just sitting out back chillin' behind the shed.

Steam generator? We're looking for cheap/simple bulk... I dare say if the drum is properly sealed, itd likely work for your application as well... it's usually boiling and hot to the touch in 30-45 minutes, and will accommodate 42 bags IME... you'd likely want to use more water, thus lengthening heat time, so yeah... likely better to go big in that instance I suppose... but he seemed very unsure of his mechanical/electrical ability and figure a single barrel, 120v system that requires no additional gadgetry a better solution... outside commercial production, I think 42 bag capacity would likely fit most hobbyists' needs

170 is for pasteurization: which would require a PID even with 120v element... this is for a steam sterilizer love you too mane

You may be looking for cheap and simple, I however am not. I guess you're not aware of who grower is, that's ok but he is more than capable. I was just explaining why you would have a more expensive element and why you would pay money to dial it back. Still though, even in a single barrel unit it is the best option, just not cheapest.
Check out what he designed:
http://www.bubbasbarrels.com/catalog/kombucha-mushrooms-cold-brew-coffee/mushroom-sterilizer

You don't hold too much water in the steamer because its fed by a stainless float valve connected to a pressure regulator and hose. So no.

Float valves are for safety, you may not have one but it certainly is beneficial:shrug:

I'm running 7-8 cycles before noticing any drop in fluid levels, I'd built one with a float valve and dont use it bc the valve engages and then wont disengage until its flooded the first row of bags... I didnt see it beneficial at all really

Guess I could put a pressure regulator on it as well... more parts, more money... meh

Mine is literally the exact same thing reverse engineered as that bubbas barrel just homemade and without a float since I only need to pour about 5 or 8 i forget gallons of water in the bottom and with the lid on it doesnt use any noticable water at all during a pasteurization run. I just have a small maybe 1/8" hole drilled somewhere in the side for steam to vent and of course a little bigger hole for my couple of temp probes to go through to check a few bags interior temp. I could change the function from temp control PID to duty cycle control with the press of a few buttons if I wanted to switch from pasteurization to "atmospheric sterilization" but I have something a little better for that. Are people getting close to 100% success with these kind of atmospheric sterilized grains? I'm curious honestly let me know what yall get.

In small batches I have had success  yes... indercooking the grain prior to sterilization and running for 18hrs... I've only done one large run of grain only and fully hydrated the oats prior to bagging them: ended up with a bunch of oatmeal... 2 runs of 7 bags center in sawdust block layers both performed as well as those cooked at 15psi for 3hrs... I think bubba started out growing mush and decided that building/selling drum.sterilizers more profitable than gourmets...

Gr0wer partnered with bubba's barrel's to build and market his design. Grower is a commercial mushroom farmer and a mechanic in the US air force, bubba makes brew kits.

Gr0wer is also a member of the shroomery.

Guys, how PID works? I was thinking that it just turn on/off heating element... But you say it also works at lower watts?

So it's overall (18-24 hours cycle) cheaper to run 5500 W element than 3500 W?

Also, any idea for float valve if you don't have water hose and pressure? I was thinking about second drum with only water and I would add it manually when runs low... So I can use sterilising drum as whole, without false bottom.

You live in Germany. If youre lazy like me you can just order premade agar dishes delivered to your door. I use Pilzagar nach Kimmig 20 dishes for like 14 euros.

You can do it.

How do those work actually?
I will now look into which method would be the best/cheapest one but I thought about getting one big storage box. Or is it better to get many small ones?
A harvest of about 20gr dry would be great.
