Paper towels on the roll are sterile but only on the inside. Hope that stirs up some shit tonight.

have I missed any new teks in the past several months?
Anybody out there trying something new or have a nifty new tip/way of doing things they've picked up recently?

Hey y'all, I'm about to spawn my first shoebox in a couple days. Out of the two millet test jars one made it to 100%. I shook it yesterday and it's recovering nicely so into a box it'll go.
However I need some advice. The jar is 750ml (3/4 quart for my gringo brethren), how much coir should I use? Do you measure it by volume? And if so is that before or after hydration? Should I use more coir to augment the slight lack of spawn?

Just add coir until the sub is the depth you want. I’ve never measured just eyeballed everything. I used to make them thinner but lately I’ve been doing a quart of spawn to enough coir to fill up to the line on the sterilite shoeboxes which is deeper. Doesn’t seem to matter so far.

So now my tub seems to have to recolonize the casing. We are back to knotting again now, 6 days later.

So should I be waiting longer towards more knotting before casing or just keep looking for non-coir Jiffy 50+ and toss out the coir Jiffy as a case? This is my first late cased PE tub, so I guess I will find out in a few more days to a week.
Probably bad form to reply to my own post, but for an update, I got pins the day after posting this. So that coir Jiffy seed starter seems to work pretty well as a case. 16 days from spawn to pins is my fastest PE run. Of course, I also switched from unBodified monos to a Pasty Dialed-in, and only running one tub this round, so who’s to say. But pins always make me happy.

Gastronomicus, I've found about 100g of coir with 2 handfuls of verm to be enough to get 1.5 qt of bulk which works real well for a qt of spawn. I've been making batches for 7 SB with 700g coir 3qt verm and 2.75 qt water so whatever 1/7th of 2.75 is for water lol. Even with the 3/4 qt that would be a good ratio i think.

Might have to try those no-pours...looks like what we've been searching for as a community for ages
That coir one is kinda cool, can't really beat the simplicity of oven sterilization in my book though, hydrate -turn on oven-done. not criticizing your links, just for anybody who hasn't tried it, oven pasteurization is legit

Here's the oven tek. (just realized I wrote oven sterilization above...I meant to say pasteurization )
TLDR: Get sub to field capacity, put in turkey tin covered in foil and cook at 170 for 2 hours, only starting the timer after the substrate reaches pasteurization temps.
You can also cook the sub in jars, I've tried it many times, they don't crack. You may lose some moisture during the cook if you go this route...for some reason the turkey tins don't lose any moisture.
Unrelated PSA: Do not ride a bike at sunset in a swampy area..still coughing up a gnat or two, dead bugs in my eyes, yeesh.

Woot woot! Mouth full O bugs.
If you’re using bulk sub with manure or straw or other additives then you need proper pasteurization but with just coir or coir/verm you can do the bucket tek or just hydrate it with regular tap water.

I've seen that Roger, that people are just adding straight water. Cold? Right from the tap? I'm scared

I like to use hot tap water just to aid in hydrating all the coir, seems to help reduce the need for manual break up
If you are doing major bulk though a concrete mixing drill thing (cement spade??) Is the bees knees for doing bulk coir
I have used hot tap water on many many tubs now. If your spawn is clean it always works.

Sweet. I'll assemble the shoebox tonight I think. After shaking at 90% it's fully recovered in 48 hours. I think it's ready to rock and roll

Maybe I'm simple but I just spritz the floor with water and soap, wipe down the box with iso, wipe my racks with iso, and let it sit ten or twenty minutes. I just have a little tupperware I put iso in and fip my paper towel in. I wipe down my gloves and such when entering. I have used 10% bleach dilutions the same. I wouldn't use Lysol or bleach wipes case single use plastics (the wipes are polyethylene), and not cost effective compared to compostable paper towels.
That said sterile Tek is 1000% about how you move in the box. Its a honed skill, that cost agar and grain and us hard as hell to describe. You can run the box dry with no iso and get great results.
I was gonna say no on the dog shit Tek but realized I was just up to my elbows in cow and worm shit in the garden, so fuck it I'm in

Dog shit tek 2020. It’s coming cuz I’m pretty sure I’m about to get this house and will have much more room to work.
I used to spray soapy water in the SAB. And even before that I used to clean it first with alcohol or bleach but I’ve slowly cut down on so many things and now I just spray straight water on the SAB so that once I’m done I just dry it with a dish towel and put it away.
