Hello guys I am new to this and also a new grower of mushrooms. I have a question. So my mushroom cakes have started to have these weird golden flakes everywhere out of nowhere. I have no idea what they are and am worried. There in the fruiting stage and in monotub about 5 days now. Also one has a very light bluish color on some of the mycelium I don't know if it's bruising or contam. I know it's alot at once but it would really help me being a beginner.

Quick question, I've searched for this a good couple times and cant seem to get a solid answer.
When making Grain Water Agar, specifically Oat simmer water, what ratio of grainwater to regular water is prefered? I saw munchauzens thread, where he specified around 40-60% but that seems awful rich. My weetbix agar recipe is usually on the 10-20% level of strength. I prefer nutrient poor agar, as I like to encourage spread out growth.

If you look closely you can see the discoloring on the one on the right and the gold flakes on top of the darker one on the left...

Gold flakes are likely dryer portions of vermiculite that are protruding from mycelium, the picture isn't clear. If you're seeing blueish green then you're likely seeing bruising from a dry cake.

Yesterday I gave it a good amount of water cause I thought the same about it being dry or not enough fresh air. So I did that and am spraying and giving more air circulation now through out the day. So we'll see thanks for everything tho. I'll definitely hope on it. Oh and if it is from being dry how many time a day do u think I should spray it and how much should I spray it?

Alright chaps:
Any help on slow growth times? It's been a solid 7 days in my jars and I'm barely hitting 50% colonization. I've never had it this slow, but I have moved, so I'm assuming it's environmental, but I could be wrong. I've always had slightly slower colonization.
The deets:
Agar to grain jars - Pint size Mix of both micropore method and polyfil method, 1/4" holes in lids Temp: 65-70 degrees F. Humidity: Appx. 60% (Average air humidity around here is usually 20% or so, so this is about as good at it gets in order to keep gas exchange) HEPA air filter always pushing air through the tub.
Thanks in advance hive mind!

A2g is pretty slow sometimes, be patient recovery from shake will probably tell you more.
Environmental rh is going to have little impact on the internal condition of your jars. Are you blowing air into a mono? Not sure what the HEPA thing is for.

I’ve seen that temps around that range recommend by a couple TCs

It will grow faster at higher temps but it's not "too low". Mine are colonizing at around 80 atm, my g2g is finished in about a week. Agar to grain takes 2-2.5 weeks usually, no need to worry about 7 day's even in a smaller jar. I mean you could have bacteria slowing things down, you'll know when you have poor recovery after a shake.

Great things to try folks!
As to why I use a filter, I live at high altitude, I've found it helps from stalling.

So on this note, with poor recovery following a shake (if that does happen) is the jar toast? Toss it and move onto the next one? Or once it's colonized will it be stable enough to continue onward in it's journey.

Personally if I have a bacterial jar that still colonizes all the way I’ll spawn it. Never had a problem getting at least one good flush, usually mold shows up after flush two.
The speed can vary a lot from culture to culture also. I’ve had jars take a week and jars take a month. Usually I shake it around a week.

Yeah if you dont have fuzzy mycelium show back up on the grains in 24 hours you likely have bacteria. If this is the case I'd dump it but that's just because I always have more on deck. You can give it a whirl in a solo project like a shoebox or something as mentioned by A.k.a.
If you're always cycling spawn you'll inevitably have a jar go awry from time to time, it won't matter as much when you have more on the go and you have factored in some small percentage for failure. I don't like using bacterial spawn because it's frustrating to work with, but that's just me.

Thanks folks.
I'll give an update late on down the road on how things turned out. All good things come in time right?
Cheers!

Higher temperatures Make it easier for tricderma to Imfect mycilia in oyster mushrooms. Probably the same goes for Cubensis

Well Pleurotus ostreatus is not a tropical species, secondly the temps in that article are well above any reasonable incubation temperature that we use here on this site...36°C is pretty warm and nobody I'm aware of would recommend it. Mateah just posted a hefty cake flush he pulled at 85°F.
