I was just wondering what sort of nutrient medium would be best for culturing spores on agar?
Still pretty new to agar myself, but it would appear that I had pretty good luck with a potato starch/dextrose/yeast at at 7/7/1 ratio.
This was mostly due to the lack of malt extract in my area. But I could get starch and dextrose separate. Go figure.

Best=one that germinates spores. You can use anything really. Dog food. Brf. Potato, malt. All great choices.
I like brf because ... its brf every noob buys way to much so it's a great way to use up old pf supplies.

If you're going to do bags, bite the bullet and go unicorn: have to buy 1000 but get biodegradable spawn bags for less than 40 cents each... buying 100 will be highway robbery in comparison

If you're doing bulk, jars become a bit monotonous: it's totally possible, and has the perk of being reusable... but I love one plate>one bag>one tub... simplifies things and limits loss to a certain degree

I cut the center out in one piece and mash it up through the bag after sealing them up... I use SAGARI but can be done with any other standard recipe agar

very.. I got enough jars to not want any more should last me a lifetime. Just hate the cleaning Much rather deal with bags.
Loss wise... I canβt get tubs to work I tried a couple sets of 5 and all failed every time.. I feel my spawn ainβt the best and when I mix it gets worse . If I got a 5qt bag that colonized as 1 I could get sum tubs rollin

Sounds like you're dealing with bacteria, and likely prepping your grain too wet... try dialing moisture back, especially in bags: the issue will only be exacerbated by larger volumes

Skip tubs and go to shoeboxes. I generally toss more jars than I probably should. I feel like if I catch it in the jar I'm not wasting time or coir.
If I shake it and I don't like the way it recovers I toss it. It will more than likely still produce, but I'm not trying to be Blue Bell Icecream over here.
