I like food coloring because bacteria will suck it up and concentrate it. Makes it really easy to see when they’re day glow red/purple.

Yeah I've read around and people said the only time they had mold problems was someone that was spraying a weak bleach solution mostly consisting of water on his flow hood like every day. Put me more at ease. Still think I'm gonna throw some finish on it as a preventative, but not going to worry about every square inch not being finished like before

Anybody wear a lab coat for sab work? I always see em in cell culturing technique videos but I feel like they’d create more draft in the sab and rub the arm holes creating more airborne contams. I have one from school but I figured I’d ask before I wasted a stack of petris.

I've heard of more people doing SAB work nude than with a coat. I'm starting to not use gloves, and I dig it.

I wanna try barehanded but first I wanna try with medium gloves. Rn I’m using the larges cause I thought I had man hands a couple months ago but the extra material on the fingers keeps getting caught on the lip of the petri when I close em. Hopefully bitch size works better for me lol

I do when I'm inoculating grain. It's more for psychological effect, at least for me, because you feel like shit's fucking serious and make less clumsy mistakes. Lab coat should be quite tightly fitted, so it's no worse than having long sleeves shirt on.
When doing agar work, I'm sometimes naked, sometimes wearing gloves, however I feel. Tbf, there's not a lot of difference. I just don't care about agar that much, because it's not a huge time/cash investment.

I have a baller coat but I dont wear it often. I would normally wear it after being laundered and dried inside for days when I would spawn a lot of jars. I havent had one of those days in over a year though
On a positive note, I just nocced up around 13 jars of OATZ for the first time. What a lovely grain. Fuck WBS. I used okay-ish looking Rustywhyte on Weetbix Agar. I dont actually have high hopes for these as my specific strains of RW have been criminally slow. I'm more curious as to whether my prep was on point, so as usual for new teks I kept a jar sealed as a control.

Crackatoa-I’ve got 1 and a half cases of petris and too much time on my hands so I might give naked hands a shot soon lol. I’ll probably just split the stack between gloves and not and see how the transfers look.
Poisoned-My coat hangs pretty far off my wrists but I got it cheap from a bookstore so that Might be why. Makes an alright prop for a Halloween costume at least.
Manifold- I’ve never been able to see/smell bacteria on grain with bad prep, unless it’s a culture with obvious contamination. Granted I’ve only done a couple batches

@yeetusdeetus I have seen things you people wouldn't believe. Molds in every shade of the rainbow. bacteria in every viscosity and hue. growths that looked like cruel facsimiles of mushrooms.

I've seen that too, but not on jars that went through a PC cycle and weren't inoculated

They last several days in a paper bag in the fridge. I often get a few fruits that mature very early in the flush, and it's not worth running the dehydro for 3g. I bag and fridge em, they last until the rest of my fruits mature and I dehydrate all at once. Storing in the freezer is completely uneccesary.

Unrelated but holy shit I was going through my plates from a month back and there was an almost two inch pin laying in one of those bitches. I know that’s normal but holy shit I’ve finally successfully grown a mushroom . Gonna try to clone it but ngl I’m pretty fuckin worried I’m gonna fuck it up lol. Since it’s so big do you think it’d be better to rip it open and take some inner tissue or just slap the whole thing on a plate and call it a day?

Ha, my experience was the opposite. I tried to make oats work for months. Switched to millet, life is awesome now. I don't have to dry it, colonizes like fire.

I have regular WBS thats colonising as we speak that I got before I hit up a grain supply, and I also got some Pearl millet to try. It seems a bit bigger than regular millet, so should be better when it comes to straining.

I’d clone said whole thing Yeets of the Deets. You will die of frustration if you try to get inter tissue from a stem so thin. You could also clip a small piece of stem off maybe with flames scissors maybe.
And do it all without gloves. Naked hands feels soo nice lol. I think the level of concentration and control is higher without the sense of false security you can get from gloves.

Would you guys spawn these? Two bags, nocced up with the same clone culture but two different plates. Yesterday I noticed it looks bacterial as hell, but they're also colonizing faster than anything I've seen. Also lots of myc growing up the side of one bag. Wild stuff.
