I've built 2 hoods, and they're both made with old furnace blowers. I paid like 30 buck each for them off CL. If you don't want to break your bank I highly suggest it

Had anybody tried making one of those shmuv boxes but hooking it up to a SAB instead of a bag??
I know absolutely nothing about the stuff but it seems like there might be a way to get a much larger working area for cheaper with something like that.
Soon as my coir cools I’m spawning my first Amazonian shoebox. Feels so good to have things going on again.
I’m gonna make a Walmart run for more jars and tubs too. I was planning on more underbeds but now thinking I’ll split it between those and monos. Never run mono tubs yet.

I've spent far more than that over the years. My hood from FP cost me around 1200 plus shipping, then add all of my media bottles, magnetic stir plates, agar, dishes, sterilizes, and all of the accoutrements. This hobby probably has me in for around 10k or more since I've started.

No but a guy posted just recently that he hooked up a household hepa air purifier to an SAB and got good results.
The shmuvbox has always been tempting, or something like it. Trying to think of something lighter to make the hood out of but alas wood seems the best option

oh my god, that hurts just to read. I definitely would've gotten a free/cheap blower from an hvac shop if they cost 1500

I've tried HVAC shops, CL, ebay, Amazon, flea markets.... HVAC won't even speak to me when they realize that I'm not a business. Most places won't sell directly to the public and people rarely sell anything useful for mycology on used sites so I'm stuck with purchasing new and mostly having to do so from the US. Import costs are fuckin astronomical.

Call everyone of them, I got lucky and got a used 1tdt2 for 20$ from my work. I bet most hvac places have a bunch of used blowers just sitting around and usually don't mind getting rid of them for a good price. Look for a family owned business even if it means you have to drive a little ways, because it's tough to get a new one with the trade restrictions going on right now.

I just said fuck it and bought a new blower that fit my specifications.it will last forever so I'm not concerned too much about the price in the end.

Wuts your wait on it, I looked on Granger, menards, lowes all the hardware stores and the soonest I would have been able to get one was Aug 28. So I said something to our maintenance guy at work who does all the HVAC stuff, he's like wut do you need I showed him one on Granger and he said oh I think we have a few of those that just got replaced when they put in new vents and blowers. There isn't anything wrong with it they just switched them to 3phase and the single phase blowers just got stacked up on a pallet.

this is a cross post from ayeplus a+ bag tek in case no one sees that one...I gotta figure this shit out I wanna get more bags ready cause I'm fairly certain these first bags I did in my AA are too fuckin wet. since there are plenty of bag masters on here I figure maybe someone else might be able to answer it sooner...
I'm probably the one person ever who ran bags in an AA and said to myself "fcuk I wish I did that in the presto" when I opened it Once I figure things out the AA will be far superior but this first batch, fuk. Some of the bags will prob still work but there is one that is almost a solid block of burst grain starch
Quote:
Aye
When you load all these bags...at the end, when you cram them down with the lid I can only imagine this must compress the bottom bags and push the water level really high?
I'm asking cause I just used my AA 941 for the first time and it seems like the bags took on some amount of water during the PC cycle. I tried loading the AA again with newer bags and noticed by the time I was packing the last ones in, the water level had risen like halfway up the inside of the PC. This is with the initial water level going up about 3/4 of the way of the bottom bags...added after adding those first 3 bags like in your tek...
So even if you aren't initially seeing that water level rise, I would think when you push the top on the thing it must be causing the water level to rise. This doesn't affect your bags?
Some of my bags came out with a lot of popped/burst grains, but it seems like even more so than when I used to run my presto or mirro. One bag was just a big mush of exploded grains and starch...like a thick block of shit. It's possible my grain prep was too wet, but I prepare it no differently for bags and jars I do in the presto and it works, always works.
I got so excited about the AA I didn't reaelize there would be such a learning curve. I can push bags out of my presto like a factory but the AA has been a struggle so far. Need to figure this out. So with my presto I actually use a bottom rack under the trivet, so that the bags stay almost completely out of the water. I thought maybe about doing something similar on the AA but it will reduce efficiency.
Since you guys do this on the regular...hoping I can figure this out without reducing the PC space with another rack
Advice?

What kind of blowers do you guys need for them??
I’ve got some friends that do HVAC I can ask around.
It’s 100-120 degrees everyday for at least four months here and people constantly need repairs so it’s big business.

If you're gonna use an old furnace blower, find one that's around 1/2hp, 1000 rpm, and 115v. Try to find one with multiple speeds then it's just a matter of wiring up the different speeds and bogging down with pre filters til you get a desired flow rate.
A good flow will bend a lighter 60-90 degrees without blowing out 3-6" from the filter face
Edit: only get 115v if you're stateside. Ma bad european friends

Forgot to break up my jars before I inoculated them, probably gonna have to knock the piss out of it to get it to shake properly. Is banging em hard gonna hurt the myc too much to recover?

Just thought I'd share that it is very much possible to not clean your tubs enough between crops. I finally have clean spawn (after a battle with a subversive contam in my petris...) and I still had little green trich growths on the edge of my monos... when I looked super close to the tub wall above the growth... I SAW A GREEN STAIN I MISSED WHEN CLEANING! doh!
I immediately got a big soft car washing sponge and now wash once after I toss the old substrate, and again before I spawn. Both times with tons of soap. Happy to say I'm seeing multiple flushes again, no contams.
I am very half assed, so I needed to fail hard to know to clean well. Others just do things more thoroughly the first time.

I really thought that would work lmao.
I found some pin mold on 2 tubs today so melmac isn't going great. Im pretty sure the spawn was clean. No more preparing coir and leaving it sitting around. I was getting away with it on the giant organics brand blocks but of course Eco earth can't handle the wait.
Or maybe I'm just cursed when it comes to LC.
