Your culture might be worn out. Cloning a clone isn't the best practice and a year is a long time to store a plate. Your culture could also be contaminated. Make a few transfers to make sure it's clean and change your media to perk the culture up a bit. Or you could just start from spores and find a new culture.

what would cause that problem? actually I've been trying bags as well, I'm just going back to jars now because I have to face the fact that whatever I've been doing is not working with bags and I need to take it back to jars to figure my shit out before I progress to bags. I never get any mold contams, just bacteria. I tested my LC on agar and it grew out with no sign of bacteria.

Bags can be a mother fucker. Their mass can cause temps to get a bit high, making conditions perfect for bacteria. They also need to be sterilised much much longer for the heat to penetrate.

Yea that's where I'm at now. I have some spores germinating. I really tried to make it work with this culture. I did everything I could to colonize grain with it but it always went bacterial. I feel like colonization time is the culprit. I just didn't expect such vastly different results from one grow to the next, maybe I isolated a poor gene from the clone I took.

I know. my experience with bags is "How the fuck does anyone do this??"
I really don't know how anyone can make bags work because the problem is that with such a large mass you get so much heat generated that condensation on the interior surface of the bag is inevitable. It doesn't matter if your grain is dry enough or not because eventually it will all heat up and force condensation to form which will become a pool of bacteria. So how is it done?
I think fast colonization is the key, and the one variable I haven't been able to get right. jars aren't all that bad, I can fit about 2/3 as much grain in a cycle with jars as with bags but at least condensation isn't going to wreck everything.

I don't mess with bags for grain. I've been making qt jars work for a few years now. I see no need to change somthing that works. I like bags for sterilised substrates like suplimented sawdust but for grain I find them to be more trouble than there worth.

Can I just break a chunk of dry wall out of my walls and use that for gypsum?

Yup. I use drywall for my gypsum. I use off cut pieces from my job sites but putting a hole in your wall should work too. You could probably find some scrap drywall laying around if there are any houses being built in your area.

If you are talking about a transparent almost invisible ring around the white mycelium, it is just mycelium. It turns white soon.

I finally got a bunch of micropore tape!
Next tub I'll try it out, can't believe I just polyfilled my pasty plates and as soon as I started running the pressure cooker the tape arrived :p
How do you guys like it for jars?
Also, I was at the dollar store and couldn't say no to the crappiest WBS I've ever seen, 1 kilo for a buck. I'm going to do some test jars and tiger drop entire agar plates in each one (I have more agar than I know what to do with). This blend has cracked corn, millet, wheats, sorgum, black sunflower (which I removed) and oats. Might turn into a mushy mess, but fuck it. Wish me luck.

Hey guys,
as I have learned, shaking jars after full colonization is a way to find out if the jar is contaminated.
If they recover after 2 days (48 hours), they are ok for G2G, if they recover after 3 days (72) hours, they are at least ok for a spawn try.
I have these jars here: the picture was made after 50 hours, so 2 days and 2 hours after shaking at full colonization.
What do you think? Are they fully recoverd? No, right? Or is that meant by "full recovery"?

Regards

What do you do? Take the whole roll out and chop it into little rolls on a mitre saw?
