not really sure how surface area has a role in that but I also want to ask is which is better a 1:2 at 2" depth or a 1:1 at 3" depth?
I have 1 qt of spawn that I'd wish to test and some small tupperware containers are all I have to put it in. Note the 3" 1:1 sub has much less surface area as it is in a much smaller container
A 1:2 2" depth would inevitably have a much larger surface area than a 1:1 3 inch depth... go with the 1:2

If he top fruited the spawn jar he would likely see less pins out the top of the jar than if he spawned it to a tub. No?

Too much surface area = faster loss of moisture and more fruits to supply with water. Hence why some many people make posts about how small their fruits are. They don't understand that water supply is critical for a yield.
Fewer pins with greater water supply and more nutes grow into massive fruits. It's a balance and until you understand that, you will never be able to make the most of either the massive surface area or the small.
Muda could tell y'all a thing about surface area, dude been fruiting monos on both sides for ages.

Here's some surface area for you. Cambo bulk sub propped up on its side so 5 sides can fruit. Looks cool but yields are no better than average for these genetics.

Except read his post. It's really not any better of a yield. Yield is more about genetics and water management than fruiting area.

Yeah I get that. But saying surface area doesn't matter at all? Cmon. You ain't getting a yield like that out the top of a mason jar, are you? I know it's an extreme example but for arguments sake
Obviously there are many more factors at play

I'm not? I get 20-30 grams dry first flush from one of these. Assuming a 66 quart mono with 5 quarts spawn and 10 quarts sub gets 10 oz first flush, these outperform that most of the time.

Yeah man. I've fruited tons of subs like this or on wire GH shelves so all 6 sides can fruit. Not once did it improve yields. All it the only difference in performance was the fact that I had to work much harder to keep them hydrated.
On the flip side my bottles gave verry little surface area but tend to give me at least 50% better yields than the same amount of substrate in a mono tub.

Okay so let me pick yoyr brain since we're in the appropriate thread Why do you bother spawning jars when you're getting better results top fruiting?

Those aren't top fruited grain jars. They are a mix of grain and bulk. I've got a tek in my sig. Pasty has a similar tek using flower and straw.

kool got it about right for my 1 qt spawn test. thanks everyone for clarifying that.
Love your bottle tek muda! That is what really made me realize how unimportant surface area really is.
