This is like my third time thinking of it. I keep forgetting it over time and then re-realizing how much fucking time it would cut off my agar work. Some kind of multiplied version of such a device that can shoot out wedges like a pez dispenser would be more ideal but.. one step at a time..

Totally. Save us from that 'slide up the blade' problem. Something like a backwards scissor snip would work well.

Lately I've been using a pottery tool instead of my scalpel to do transfers because of that exact problem. It's basically a curved scalpel. Only downside is the handle is made of wood instead of metal.

That's kind of cool too... Reminds me of those.. lazy-fucker extendable arms for picking up remotes and shit. Or, you know, the physically disabled. Either way.

Sounds like victor in the q&a had the same idea "Does it come in a straight blade version too?"
The more I'm thinking of this, the more I think a trigger snip would be awesome. Probably even eliminate some of my contams.

Some dude on Facebook made a rig out of a piece of wire, the outside of a metal pen, and the spring from the pen... He had it rigged with the wire down the center of the pen, he somehow fashioned the spring on the end that you would hold attached to the wire... Basically it worked just like a pen that clicks open and closed... He would press it to expose the wire when he flamed it, then would retract it back into the tube.. Then he would stab an agar plate cutting out a perfect pen sized circle.., then eject that transfer into a new plate by depressing the wire down again.., dude got like 50 transfers off of one plate... Pretty neat shit.

Well it's an awesome idea and I'll be sure to keep it in mind when I get to isolating clean growth and expanding. Great info here

That pen things sounds pretty bad ass loch I got pretty pissed the other day I was like "bam bam" with my knife into the agar every transfer got stuck to my blade luckily no nasties but I have like 5-6 spots of myc where I was stabbing and cussing like a sailor haha .... Quick question about growing clones I did a few transfers to make sure it was clean noc'ed up a few jars from each plate then grain to grain do you guys test just clones like that with one or two jars or just do a regular mono? I know I've read it a hundred times but can't remember if it's isolates of clones or just flat out clone wedges with a few transfers

How many of you guys soak your grains before spawning to bulk? Like shaking up your jars after they're fully colonized, then pouring them out in a bowl and soak in cold water for 10-20 minutes, then drain and spawn.

If I did I would just do it in the same jar they were broken up in, and then I would subtract the volume of water that they're soaking in from the bulk sub recipe(or not..), and just add the whole jar of water and grain to the bulk sub at once so that I'm not rinsing myc down the drain. But nah, I don't really do that much. But I have, and it was fine.
It doesn't take a large volume of water to rehydrate broken up grain though, probably be fine with like, a cup, or less.

That's a great idea. Thanks

I had a lid that I punched a bunch of holes in. So I open all the jars, pour water in. Let it set for like 10-20 minutes, then take that lid and put it on the first jar. Tip upside down to strain. Then just repeat down the line for all the jars. I don't soak usually though unless the grains are real dry.

i used my wifes curved nail scissors the other day cause my 'agar knife' was in the DW. it worked really well! i snipped my wedge and used one end to 'scoop' up the piece and just closed the scissor and it dropped perfectly on the center of my new plate.
i didnt even think of reusing it but after i saw the last few post i was like 'shit maybe ill use them' ...wife said 'buy your own fucking scissors'

this is the exact one!! only downside is the size.. longer would be better so i dont bump my pp5 containers.(i have shaky hands)

Yeah, you don't need to use a bowl to dunk your grain. I fill the jars one by one and empty them right after I fill them all. I don't let them soak or anything, a simple and short dunk is enough.

Got a psylocibe cyan wavy cap coming in the mail for novelty that I got for basically free.
Never grown these. Question. I thought cyans were pans. These are definitely psylocibe.
What's the difference? Anyone got a good tek to grow wavy caps? I've only done PF tek and now a few grain jars via MS.
I'm not opposed to sitting on it until I learn more of the hobby like agar sooner than later if that is what's needed to grow these.
Thanks everyone.

Ps cyans will be best done outdoors. Bit late in the year tho. Probably start culture work in November or December to expand and get outside by spring.
