are you using a presto 23? you might want to add more weight. sounds like youre venting out all the water during the cycle

i am using prestos 23 , and i did add weight , my weights are old as fuck and maybe could be not functioning correctly ? now that i think about it they lost the little ring that's on the hole that fits the steam outlet ,
holy shit ted could that be it ? didn't think it mattered but maybe it's letting too much steam all through out the cycle

Was it in here recently that someone was talking about an Excel spreadsheet to track their transfers and subsequent jars, bags, tubs, prints, and back to transfers? I'll be honest, I may have imagined that or it may have been on different group. Trying to think of ways to track a 3 digit number of plates. I DO NOT want an Excel spreadsheet, but anyone who did would probably have some good ideas. I love my hand written log and want to keep this info in there, but I'm struggling to find a way to condense that much info and still be useful and easy to read. Also, not take up my entire book, though that may be unavoidable. I'm starting with roughly 100 plates of a mix of germ\t1\t2\t3 (a couple were cracked or dropped and I haven't recounted). Transfers will be done from these, though probably not every single one. Even still, there is going to be a lot of info to track.
Clarification: not asking about labeling, more long term tracking. I think I may have to break down and start a second book. I would love to both be able to trace a genetic line back to a print or clone, but also keep some sort of notes or comments about each step. Right now my labeling tracks them short term, but once they hit coir, the tracking kinda stops without making the labels stupidly long.

My presto has a tendency to leak around the rubber seal for the lid. I have to remember to wipe it down with some form of oil.

That did help, thanks. Found a few cataloging posts from years again and I have a some ideas about coding instead of just abbreviating some aspects. Would require a key for it which makes the second book almost a certainty. Thanks man!

oil ? what for ?
i got brand new gaskets and checked , they were not leaking anymore , i'm buying some new weights to eliminate that vector , hopefully it's that

Its recommended in the presto manual to use oil on the gasket if there are leaks. No clue why it is effective but I've done it before and it works like a charm

That's what I use. On my old seal I used to have to soak in hot water for a HR first. Then I would dry it off and oil it. Worked like a charm bit of I didn't do this the PC would leak down the sides .

You can also stretch the seals so they fit snugly against them outer edge of the lid and coat with high heat oil. I use to stretch it a bit every time I used it.. helped a lot

Funny the topic is presto seals bc I just came here to write about having to swap my seal. It may be time to swap it out if your lid locks in place with little to no effort. I had an extra on hand when when one of mine started leaking steam while coming up to operating pressure. I stopped it and saw that I lost almost a quart of water so I swapped it and now it will hit 2.5psi while venting. Moral of the story is keep a spare gasket around if you run a presto with at least 30 cycles on it I’ll end up keeping the old one around as a backup but it’s been oiled and stretched many times already- I can confirm doing those things do help it to fit more snugly and to seal better.

Yeah I'm going to have to oil mine too. It's been through a few cycles. I've seen lately that its having trouble building up pressure. I don't have the gauge on mine but it just took way to long till it would vent with pressure. So stretch it with a little strength? Just a little I'm guessing. I'm sure its probably hard to snap?

Yeah.. just stretch it out... I’ve also had it where the safety valve on my presto came unscrewed slightly and steam was escaping from that valve because it wasn’t pressing the seal all the way up against the lid

oil that sheeit always! makes em last longer also in the instructions it says to soak in hot water before use whenm new. that helps as well. if you're reaching 20psi on a regular basis(like me ) expect premature death of seal

20 PSI on a presto. No thanks. With thin aluminum I dont trust it. I can see on a AA which I also oil the metal to metal just for everyone that is enjoying this pressure cooker maintenance class this evening.
AA is a little more heavy duty, but 20 PSI seems like a like of pressure if one of your seals gives out. I used to get that venting around my plug. Just good maintenance to replace seals every year or so.

thats a note, not a practice;) I use a presto for agar only. my AA's hit 20PSI on the reg and oil or vaseline is standard unless u want stuck lids. 20 is the baseline for the warning on the gauge and shouldnt blow out anything unless its old or damaged
