Ya i got 4 of em. I never did ger em dialed in. Bad spawn and just not the right surface conditions. Scaled back worked on my spawn. I had 2 clean quarts before i started really getting into it. I have 7 jars ready for a bigger tub prolly next week.

So Today I Learned; * 1 lb of Briess Pilsner LME on Ebay @ 10g per 500mL would be 45 times or 1 cent per plate. * 45 times per 20 stack @ $15 ea. stack would be $680 * 24 Corning Vista plates are $109 * so for 7.27 batches of agar and 20 plates I would break even for buying glass.
And yes I did notice someone said they're a pain to work with, don't stack well, etc. Ok, but I'm not really ever going to bulk up, 24 plates and mebbe a stack plastics is all I need. SIGMA CLS70165101-24EA CORNING(R) VISTA(TM) PETRI DISH DIAM. 100x15mm

Yeah, I get the whole plastic waste\suspicious waste issue, but I can't justify the cost and use issues of glass Petri dishes when the celltreat 500 case is so cheap on Amazon. Speaking of which, I really need to go through all my plates and get rid of a lot of old ones.

Celltreat Nest Thomas
Prices fluctuate between $70-90 through Amazon. I got my Nest's for ~$70.
I'm gonna try glass after this. I, too, don't like the plastic waste. Plus you can just make slants, a few dozen plates, and a bunch of LC extend to bulk production I would assume.

Ya, of course this is very hypothetical at this point, such a noob! But I get this gnawing feeling of not wanting to waste a plate and make too many. Girls just wanna have fun and I just wanna throw some plates down to play with.

Hello All,
So I’ve been working with BRF and shoe boxes pretty successfully for over a year now. Now I’m ready to move to larger grows with grain and making LC or LI from Agar. But I have get some fresh mushrooms to get started. So, step one grow mushrooms.
I’ve been reading through threads and have gotten some good starting points. But, I still have questions left to be answered before experimenting with new Teks. They are:
1) Does the substrate impact potency or is it truly just colonization time before fruiting? (I’ve been strictly using coir)
2) Is LC better than LI?
3) Is it ok to inoculate grain with spore syringes? (I know they aren’t always the most reliable, but I’ve purchased them through an approved vendor, if that even matters. I have a couple left I need to use.
Thanks for the tips!

I was just looking for some myself after seeing someone else lab pic. Big project coming up and figure it's a good time to get some. I'll preface this by saying I buy most of my equipment like this from Amazon or a shroom supply company that I'm not sure I can say the name since not talking directly about cult of certain species. I know a lot of people have issues with Amazon, but for me it is actually buying local as there is a large warehouse very close to me which both means supporting local workers and that I can get an INSANE amount of stuff same-day or next-day for free-shipping. I have no preference on manufacturer as I haven't worked with enough to form an opinion but I found a 25pack plus rack of pp5 50ml conical tubes for $18. There are others for less without the rack as well as a 500case for $140 (if I remember correctly. Came out to about $0.28\tube). I'm a cheap bastard and always go for the cheapest thing that fills my needs. Too many times I have spent a little more for a "better" product only to find it doesn't do what I need or doesn't do it as well as a cheaper version. Anyway, sorry go on a rant there for a bit. Point is, if you are still looking around, I would suggest checking there if for no other reason than price and product comparison.
@butterflyaway- not ignoring your questions man, just don't know enough to answer. I will say though it sounds like you are doing it right, taking your time, putting in the groundwork, doing the research, asking the right questions, taking advice, applying that research and advice, and for that I commend you. You will find lots of help here for it

If you only had the option to fruit in a garage that gets down to 35f/2c at night would you give up?
Would a TIT for an unmodified mono cause too much condensation? Would the heat even get up to the temps required to fruit?
Any other options? Its a big garage, not sure a space heater would get the temp up high enough.

A few options, non of them perfect in my opinion.
You could use a Martha type green house or some other relatively large container to keep tubs in and out a space heater in the GH. This keep the temp up within a smaller area, but as always anytime you are running a space heater, especially if using an extension cord, there is a risk of fire. Space heater running nonstop in garages are a major cause of house fires because you won't see it until it's too late. A similar, and arguably safer option, would be a ceramic or Mercury valor heat lamp. The kind you would use for reptiles. Ceramic heat emitters only put out heat, no light, which means they are more efficient and won't screw with your light cycle. A 150watt emitter will make a hot spot around 105-115 6" from emitter in normal use. Mercury vapor bulbs put out plenty of heat, but also light so might not work unless you can block the light at night or flop your light cycle. (Day at night, night at day). For either of these, precaution would be making sure they are far enough away from tubs and GH to not melt\catch fire, and making sure there are not hot spots in GH that could screw with a tub. However, these are meant to run all day every day so less of a fire hazard than a space heater. Would recommend using blanket to insulate GH\container to hold in heat also.
Another option is a small kerosene or propane heater. A large enough garage shouldn't cause too much of a ventilation issue, but it would be something to be aware of and cautious at first. Make sure your not gonna suffocate your myc or yourself.
Going back to the GH idea, a tub of water and a water heater, or sous vide machine if you have one, may also work but may require wrapping a blanket around water tub or GH to insulate and hold the heat in.
Any variation of these would work but the key ideas are: Provide a safe heat delivery mechanism Limit the volume of air you have to heat Reduce rate of heat dissipation
It's doable
Edit: also, I don't know what a TIT is, at least not the one you are talking about.
Edit edit: for reference I use a expired MVB (Mercury vapor bulb) as the heat source in my dehydrator. I have a second, incandescent, bulb to supplement heat if it is loaded extra full but for the most part 1 MVB (100 watt I think) is enough to run a 20"x20"x34" dehydrator. The bulbs put out UvA and UvB waves which are essential for reptile bone development which is in part why they are popular with herpetology hobbyist but the Uv output diminishes or expires over time. You can sometimes find people selling expired bulb for super cheap. I just save my old ones for later uses that don't need Uv light.

Maaaan I’d love to have a space that stay right above freezing.
Aren’t there species that require very low temps? Some gourmet too I think?

1) Does the substrate impact potency or is it truly just colonization time before fruiting? (I’ve been strictly using coir) Def not substrate. Mostly genetics. Some say higher colonization time = higher potency, but I'm kind of dubious. I've grown in some really piss poor conditions that took forever to fruit, but I didn't notice any significant difference in the potency.
1) Is LC better than LI? I've noticed them both colonize at about the same rate. I'd opt for LC because you're not damaging the culture when putting it to grain. But, then again, you don't have to wait for LI's to colonize... I think it's a preference thing.
1) Is it ok to inoculate grain with spore syringes? (I know they aren’t always the most reliable, but I’ve purchased them through an approved vendor, if that even matters. I have a couple left I need to use. The rate of failure for MSS > Grain is very high. You're better off using those syringes on agar or making more PF cakes with them.
Thanks for the tips!

Thanks very much Randalf for some great tips and some additional things to consider. I'm close to postponing until I have more space and can grow inside.

I've had hyphal knots on the surface of my shoebox substrate for a week now, and none of them are pinning. They are getting 12 hours of indirect sunlight/6500k rooflight. Humidity seems fine to me, it's not dried out. The lid is flipped.
Anyone familiar with similar waiting times for knots? Should I just wait it out or do I need to take action.

Sub has shrunken and pins are starting to grow on the sides.
