Well the first thing is having clean spawn, next is ensuring that your coir isn't too wet or too dry. Better to be on the dry side though as apposed to too wet.

Bacteria will cause slow growth, it will also result in stalled growth.

Cold temps can also slow growth.

@gizmo thanks, that was my first WBS attempt. I'll forgo the 24 hour cold soak and do either a bucket tek hydration or a stove simmer.

Is the 12 hour soak necessary or can it be overlooked?

You can skip it pretty outdated anyways I still do it out of habit. I would suggest to rinse the bitd seed pretty good if you dont soak.
Also when you simmer or blanch use fresh water. I used to use the soak water(in my mind preserving the nutes) and the grain would always come out way more sticky.

visually asses the spawn and shake when needed.  smell check before use

So yesterday I encountered my first sweet smelling spawn. What is this supposed to be indicative of was it bacteria?

I started having success with wbs when I stopped the soaking. I just rinse the crap off them and load jars. I add water until it just touches the top of the wbs then pc 90min. Comes out great. After inoculation and shake, any sliminess is gone.

I started by using this formula-
Take ml of dry Millet times .58 this tells you how many ml of water to add. PC at least 90 min.

Doing the math and measuring several times I found the water level to consistently be just at or under the surface of the wbs so I eyeball it now. Hopefully that helps someone.

I was just having inconsistent results with soaking and drying and still having the water content right. I looked at several no prep recipes and did the math and that's where that number came from. I like using ml bc then I know how many grams of water if I ever needed to do it by weight. Doing it this way just puts me in the sweet spot.

Yeah, indicative of bacteria.

Wtf is going on here? My WBS prep is jst rinse the dust/floaters off, boil the shit, drain the shit, load & pc. Grian must be massively inconsistent. I thnk berries are a bitch cuz ya gotta make some kinda fucking mouse trampoline and a big ass fan to dry them son-bitches.

I went back to oats, just boil and let dry overnight. Pretty simple.

It would be nice to have a grain that I can just hydrate and load directly into the pc.

When I do wbs I soak, drain, load wet. PC 2hrs.

Quote:

Measure out desired amount of seed. i scoop out 8 half quarts for 7 myco quarts worth of soaked wbs.

Add water from the tap to cover some seed. mix or agitate the water to help clean and mix up the seeds.
(holy shit i have a hairy arm)

skim off all that shit that floats. be thorough.

Mix it up again. more crap will float up.

skim that junk out as well.

now we dump and rinse until the water is clear. i do this about 4-6times. depends. the last batch
from a bag is always dirtier and takes some more washing. use your pasta strainer to hold the seed while you are dumping.

After your rinsing, the water should be clear. the seed should look really nice too.

you may also add gypsum or whatever to your water. i couldnt find my gypsum.. oh well.

Now we cover and soak until tomorrow afternoon. see you then!!:awedance:

Its tomorrow!!

Here is my 24hr soaked birdseed.

save some of that water!!

store ice cubes and use to make grain water agar. just mix in agar and use as normal(more on that later):awedance:

use your trusty wire pasta strainer and drain in the sink while you prep your jars:thumbup:

after 20min-30min i take out and tilt the strainer to drain out any trapped water.

not much but you dont want that extra water in the jars.

load up jars with desired amounts.

clean the rim of grains that stick. these can be vectors later:thumbdown:

THIS IS HOW THEY WILL LOOK WHEN LOADED. NORMALLY THESE WOULD BE ALMOST TOO WET. DO NOT WORRY!!!!!

screw on lids and get the pc ready!

i needed 4 regular mycoquarts and 3 receiving jars for LAGM2017 g2g masters
add tin foil covers.

load up. MY AA915 holds 7 quarts. i tried to squeeze in a pint jar once. it cracked. 7 quarts is it.

do this for 2hrs. 15psi

use as desired

The end of my last bag was rough. There were tons of like half seeds and stuff that were too big to fall through the strainer but small enough to make things a little sludgy. Seemed to work alright though

Anyone had much experience using these big jars, about a gallon or 3.1L?

Iโ€™ve used all my jars and these are all Iโ€™ve got left

Who eats that much sun dried tomatoes sauce? I do not think your gonna get the seal you want out of those. But you can try them out and tell us if it is pass or fail.

gallon half gallons work fine for me if I use a pint of colonized grains to inoculate with or better still the Slurry in a hurry tek. I only load them 2/3 full and sometimes I start colonizing on their side so the bottom of the jar doesn't get anaerobic. These are all 4 days old.

Shook the left two, never shook the right one.

Ahhh Iโ€™m gonna try them then fuck it! :awecluster:

I was wondering if I could pc them full of substrate for gourmets instead of using bags then transfer the sterilised substrate into a modified shoebox in front of flowhood then inoculate with grain... :hook:

Anyway...

They were actually sundried tomatoes, not sauce, I liberated them because I liked the jars and thought the would prove useful and they probably will

You could always try wrapping the neck in cling or using a sfd thatโ€™ll cover the mouth.

I need to get gallons of spawn colonized in four days thatโ€™s so sweet.
