Was looking at a couple ziplocks of spawn I shook friday thinking they were recovering slowly and realized I've had them (unmodified) closed tight. D'oh! Backed the threads up a bit to let them breathe a bit. Prepping two more quarts of rye now, gonna do some transfers and inoc them later. lazy sunday.

Just had to toss 2 tubs due to trich Im guessing it was due to me being lazy and just using hand temperature water to hydrate my coir. Started out as small round white spots on top of the coir casing i had, really aggressive growth. In just couple of hours you could see how much it had grown. I have one shoebox left in which i did not do a casing layer and it seems like cubensis myc is growing nicely and has almost completelly covered the top so i hope i can at least get a single flush out of it.
Oh well, at least i learnt to not be so lazy. Its not fun to lose a months progress. At least I got 5 bags of rice i did grain to grain going and 5 that i used a syringe on. Lets hope they go well at least.

They fit 10 qts, asically same as a presto 23 but a tiny bit shorter and a little wider. I have an older one I got for 80$ at a thrift store and I love it.
I think 140 is a little high for my taste but theyre super nice and I already have one so ymmv

I’m trying to snag a 300$ AA 941 off craigslist but the phone number listed rang through to a business number a couple counties over and they were closed so I dont have the highest hopes. But I’ll try again tomorrow for sure.

How much impact cam leaving a moldy tub in your room for a few days actually have??
I’ve had 5 of my last 6 shoeboxes get some kind of green mold either right at the start of or right after the second flush. I don’t think it’s trich it’s not very aggressive but similar look.
So of the five two were ms to grain and two were questionable plates, so that’s not surprising, but the last one was a clean plate and as far as I could tell clean spawn. Looked really healthy and came back after the shake immediately so that’s whats got me worried.
I’ve got like 30 qts that’ll be done over the next week or so which is a huge amount for me and also will be my first 5qt tubs so I don’t want to risk losing them to something as simple as wiping down the room.
When it comes up on here though it seems like people are pretty polarized and either don’t think it makes much difference unless you’re open fruiting trich or they’re super OCD about spores.
Either way I’ll be doing some level of cleaning but I’m curious about this now.

you can spawn outside or in a dirty barn. it doesnt matter if youve got clean spawn;)
if they doint contam when spawned to tubs that at one point or another had trich in em its not because of your room was clean.
sounds like the green is aspergillus and that usually comes on your spawn

See that’s been my thinking this far, getting the same exact mold so many times just made me reconsider.
Cue the opposing argument:....

I think the worry is that increased spore load increases chances of contams in your spawn (assuming your SAB/FH is in the same room. Don’t think anyone’s worried about mold germinating on coir.
Just food for thought - I thought I had clean spawn for months, until one particular batch of jars (a2g) that looked “extra healthy” to me. A few weeks and dozens of jars later, it turns out that was just the first truly clean spawn I ever ran. Trashed all my other cultures and starting over from spores ATM. So just because spawn looks healthy, doesn’t mean it is...unless you’re a pro I guess.

This is exactly where I am right now. I was obsessed with my spawning/post spawning technique/cleanliness.... But I really think I was unlucky and didn't have clean spawn, not for a lack of trying. What has taken me a while to understand is non-clean spawn can look and act and smell like clean spawn. But when it tams out, you gotta go back to the beginning. Its not talked about this way on the forums... but subtle dirty spawn is a thing. (I think, no expert here)

Yeah for sure. I’m getting better at recognizing what’s going on with spawn now that I’m using agar.
Right now my main thing is how it comes back after shaking. I have two jars I was super careful and clean with, payed attention to how the growth off the wedges looked and how it did after a shake and now I compare everything to those. I definitely have a couple right now that are bacterial but the kind that makes the myc too thick, and a month ago I would’ve thought it was good to go.
