Tried another wbs prep. Usually use Frank's tek. I put the wbs into the pot before heating the water. Covered with about 4 inches of water. While it came to simmer I halfassed getting out the seeds. I stirred till it came to a boil, let it go for 5 mins at a boil. Shut it off and let sit for an hour. Strained it on a screen. Rinsed thengell out of it. Let it drip for about 45 mins. Put it in a tupperware overnight in the fridge. Jar and pcd 2 hours at 15psi.
No excess moisture after pc. I started with about 8 quarts dry seed lost about a quart to seeds. Ended up with 12 quarts and a pint of prepped seeds.

Got back to growing, did some cakes with MS with WBS flour cause I didn't have any cultures left.
I thought, you know, since I'm small scale, maybe I don't have to bother with grains.
We'll see, but I should probably head back into them.
I have done dozens of pounds of oats, it ain't so convenient for me, and I had a bunch of contams.
What are the best no soak/simmer grain teks out there right now? Would love to have reliable results with just water/grain in the PC. Is it only for WBS that it is recommended/used?
Maybe I should source some rye berries again.

Are seed germinations mats a good way to get started in the hobby using colder rooms? Or would a double tub using an aquarium heater for colonizing the jars and later fruiting be better?

I tried a few different things to warm my colonizing jars when i first started including a heating pad, insulating them with various shit, and placing them around electric room heaters.
It turns out that heat thru direct transfer like pads is too local and will overheat the spot touching it but not transfer much of that heat throughout the jar, leaving an undesirable temperature gradient.
Placing them close to the electric room heater worker better cuz hot air does the best job at evenly warming your shit. One step better was setting the ambient room temp and keeping the entire room and everything in it at optimal temp.
Water does an even better job of heat transfer but that seems overcomplicated.

I use a heater facing a cardboard box. It took some time to get it to stay the right temp but once I got it dialed in it’s perfect.

I also recommend the space heater. Works best in enclosed spaces. In my 6'x6'x6' area, after initial fine tuning (which I highly suggest tuning slowly to avoid overheating), I don't even have to think about it and heater only kicks on once an hour or so for a less than 5 minutes.
Anything with contact is going to be more uneven. Even putting tub in water with aquarium heater the sides that contact the water will be higher than the air inside tub.

Has anyone here grown semperviva (hoog var. convexa) on coir? I’m trying to get more into exotics because I have cubes down pat, and want a little more variety in my portfolio. I have dried and powdered manure but I’m honestly scared to use it since even pasteurized and sterilized manure destroyed my tubs even before pinning occurred. Pasteurized coir however has only shown mold in the presence of dirty bacterial spawn.
Also if anyone has any semperviva prints for trade shoot me a PM, I’ve got some super cool cubensis and some Tamp/Pan swabs I’d be willing to trade for.

Dont be scared of other subs bud. If you want to branch out to other species you will definitely need to master using substrates besides coir. I like to use compost, coir and straw mixture alot it works great for cubes and oysters. Pasteurization isn't hard and and doesnt take a whole lot of time.

Any reason not to pack substrate when spawning? I packed the shit out of a shoebox a while back while leveling and I didn't notice much difference while fruiting but I've always tried not to compact the sub while leveling.

I think people advise against packing super tight due to anaerobic bacteria.
Also I’m super hip to pasteurization, I do it for all my coir. I guess when my op is back up I’ll get used to using manure for cubes and then onto more contam-resistant species.

Hey guys, whats a good way to make sure your bulk substrate is level when you mix up your spawn? Im guessing just experience of doing it over and over again? My first box is way too uneven for my liking even tho it looked okay when i made it. Oh well, it should work even if its uneven, right?

Someone once posted using a concrete trowel.
While appealing to my OCD, that's just a little overkill for me. A nice shake and my palm usually gets a nice plane.

coir doesnt really give you the best idea of weather or not your properly pasteurizing your sub because it doesnt require pasteurization. try with straw or manure to get a much better idea. too low and too high of temps = contam. you wont know if your slightly off with the coir cause its so fail safe.
a 12" ruler makes a nice leveler for most tubs/trays. I dont use it myself but my friend with arthritis and carpel tunnel cant make a level sub any other way

I also just shake the tub back and forth and side to side for a second and that does most of the work. Then just pat it down and do the fine tuning.
