Moorhen said: Hey guys
This is my second attempt at growing mushrooms from a growkit, the last time didn't work out so the vendor sent me a new one foc
I soaked the kit overnight 3 days ago and out it in the growbag. last night I inserted the thermometer/hygrometer probes into the bag to make sure I maintan the right temperature and it quickly showed something around 23 degrees C and 99& humidity. Beautiful I thought. When I came back to it in the morning it showed 94% so I thought a little mist won't hurt so went to grab my gloves and bottle and upon return it shows 84%... I gave it a mist, put the probes back in, sealed the bag and it shows 75%. I thought it needs to adjust so I waited for a bit but it still showed the same, so I thought I'd give it a more generous mist this time but after sealing the bag again it's showing 65% which completely puzzles me. I'm starting to think that the hygrometer might be faulty as there is clearly a lot of condensation on the inside of the bag and there is water standing at the bottom of it. Even the bloody hygrometer probe has a condensation on it! any thoughts? May I add that I soaked the kit for about 6-7 hours, not 12 as in the instruction manual, do you think that might have an effect?

It prob has to do with the air flow or lack of. I can't make any suggestions with your kit, I've never used one. I have a Martha on a humidity controller and when it hits 93% it turns off. I have a fan blowing on the Martha and when the humidifier turns off and just the fan is blowing my rh actually goes up several percent. This is bc the dry air blowing into the FC is absorbing/evaping water which makes rh go up.
Sounds like your Rh was already up and when you misted it you add cool water which prob gave your humidity places to condense into water drops. This prob pulled humidity out of the air making the meter go down. If it was me I would leave it alone and not pay so much attention to the numbers, you should be using The meter as a guideline but you should be learning to read your surface conditions. Be attentive but don't love it to death.
94% is what I shoot for anyway. You're not going to hit 100% unless you're pumping in humidity like in a Martha or maybe if the room temp goes up. Cubes will tolerate a wide range of rh but over watering will cause you more problems than being a little dry.

I just got a crappy batch of eco earth. I dropped 650g brick into a bucket, added 3.25 quarts boiling like I usually do, and it immediately turned to soup. The next day, it was sitting like a turd in visible water after being mixed twice during hydration. When I squeezed the water out, I discovered a ton of sand. weird. Didn't use it.

Alot of us have noticed eco earth doesnt hold as much water.
But you found sand, huh?
Ive just been adding verm post water and using it just fine. But the sand cut is annoying. Ill be switching away from eco earth.
Not relevant but.... baby bearded dragons cant be kept on sand. Because they get tiny bits in their food and itll inevitably kill them from eating it. So people buy coir in pet stores to prevent this.
Fuck you eco earth for not caring.

Yeah, I'm down to about 2qts of water per 650g brick of Eco Earth. Still pretty much all coco as far as I've noticed... some plastic scraps and other husk fragments here and there.
Hopefully this case I just ordered isn't as shite as y'alls'ses...

Do y'all not have access to GH Coco Tek bricks? It's like $9 a brick at my area grow store and super consistent really. And the bricks are 11 lbs.

How does one get started with growing oyster mushrooms? Like do they drop spores or do I take a clone of one and treat it like cubes?

many ways: our vendors have LC for sale, the marketplace has some of our fellow cultivators offering up colonized plates for sale. I just went to a local grocery store and bought a few, took them home and took a tissue sample to agar which is growing out nicely
--------
I want to get into using bags for grain, working with a SAB I found the general tek I'm gonna use with inoculating G2G. My question is after I have poured the donor jar, can i just zip tie the bag above the filter patch and call it good? or do I have to have a sealer to work with bags?

Same.

All of mine are just fruiting on agar and getting way overripe in grain jars.
Oysters have super vicious mycelium.

I’ve been looking for oysters at the store but either they don’t have it or I can’t find it. Gonna try the fancier health food places.
I started a thread in edible or gourmet thread asking how to move from cube to oyster and there’s a bunch of good videos people linked.
I guess they have crazy spore load though, except for Kings which you can grow in monos.

You can usually take about 10 steps into a wooded area and find plenty of oysters to clone.

Yeah I’ve got nothing but sand for hundreds of miles.
I went to visit a friend in the pnw last month and they’ve got mushrooms growing off everything up there. Just gotta get through the blackberry vines the size of 2x4s without losing too much blood.
