Moorhen said: Hey guys
This is my second attempt at growing mushrooms from a growkit, the last time didn't work out so the vendor sent me a new one foc
I soaked the kit overnight 3 days ago and out it in the growbag. last night I inserted the thermometer/hygrometer probes into the bag to make sure I maintan the right temperature and it quickly showed something around 23 degrees C and 99& humidity. Beautiful I thought. When I came back to it in the morning it showed 94% so I thought a little mist won't hurt so went to grab my gloves and bottle and upon return it shows 84%... I gave it a mist, put the probes back in, sealed the bag and it shows 75%. I thought it needs to adjust so I waited for a bit but it still showed the same, so I thought I'd give it a more generous mist this time but after sealing the bag again it's showing 65% which completely puzzles me. I'm starting to think that the hygrometer might be faulty as there is clearly a lot of condensation on the inside of the bag and there is water standing at the bottom of it. Even the bloody hygrometer probe has a condensation on it! any thoughts? May I add that I soaked the kit for about 6-7 hours, not 12 as in the instruction manual, do you think that might have an effect?

From what I've seen on here, kits are bad news. Cool that you got another shot, but that brings me to my question.
Why only soak it for half of the time the instructions? Those meters have a reputation of being inaccurate at best so it is possible the readings are just simply wrong. It is also likely that sub is not fully hydrated and pulling moisture out of the air.

^^^ exactly what I was thinking when I saw this!!! If your substrate isn’t to field capacity I would think it’s going to pull moisture from the air?? Hard to say without more pics

Yeah man don’t worry about humidity, it sounds like you now have way too much water in there.
I bought all that shit too when I started but all you need is a thermometer at most.
The only humidity that matters is directly on the surface, which you can’t really measure. Just look at it to see what’s going on. I know it’s hard because you don’t know what you’re looking for, I went through the same ordeal with people telling me this same thing. You just gotta do a few grows until you learn what looks right.
A kit might be manageable once you know what you’re doing but you’ll be better off making your own stuff or this trial and error phase will get real expensive.

Thanks for the replies, one more question - when I mist the inner walls of the bag the water eventually goes all the way to the bottom and creates a puddle, should I be getting rid of it or is it ok to stay there?

just leave it alone and it will be fine

Unless that probe is directly on the surface then it’s giving you insignificant information. Relative humidity isn’t all that important. You actually want the air above the substrate at or around 50% to allow evaporation to occur. If the air around the substrate is holding too much moisture, then you can’t get evaporation to happen sufficiently and your Pinset and growth suffers.

so im going to be ordering some nice culture tubes this week, and i was wondering if anyone knows a good size to get. i purchased the FALCON 50ml tubes and i fucked up and warped all 25 in the pc..
so im looking to get some nice glass ones, the FALCON tubes had a nice wide opening for transfers so im thinking 50ml is the right size for me but does anyone have any experience with these? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B002RS5MMY/ref=twister_B004PLMF44?_encoding=UTF8&th=1
idk if they are going to have the same size on the opening as the FALCONS which makes me think i need to get 70ml???
idk

Transferred from brf agar on 1-14 to owa non diluted. My questions are Should I transfer now or let it grow out more? And is this considered slow growth?

Ime that’s pretty normal growth for five days.
I’d also like to know how people time transfers, I’ve been letting them grow out a lot because they seem to manifest sectors a week to ten days in, but it takes so long.
Lately I’ve been doing two transfers ASAP then letting t3 grow out since that seems to be where almost all of my cultures turn clean and uniform, but I just started doing it so not sure how it’ll pan out yet.

teal seal. There are always numbers. Scientists love em. If the tubes don't tell you the dimensions then don't get the tubes. The falcon tubes i have are 30 x 115 millimeters. The 30 mm mouth is real nice for reach in with a scalpel.
The ones you linked to boast "Outside Diameter = 25 millimeters". So. There ya go

Yeah. I actually like the falcons a lot. You just can't cook them over 15 PSI or with tight lids (i'm pretty sure those were the problems). Proper glass slants are quite nice though.

how melted? Like piles of goo, or just deformed? I can still use some of the deformed ones but struggling to get the lid on and off is really the last thing you want when working with a master slant of your best culture. That shit's for the birds.
