Agar before your next attempt, because the unclean nature of spore injections is the biggest vector for contamination.
Did you shake those jars after? You can speed up the process of colonization be shaking them at 30% to spread it out. If they don't recover quickly, it's a sign that something is in there competing with the mycellium.

I thought it is called pasteurizing if you pour boiling water over them and let them sit in it for however long. What else is that process called?

pasteurization is keeping something at 140-160F internal temperature for 1-2 hours. at least for this hobby,
you don't pasteurize grain spawn ever

do pasty plates
also if using wbs and you only soaked for 90m you are fucked. the grains dont have nearly enough water.
mext time do the same thing but soak(pasteurizing in your terms) for 24hrs.

Thanks for all the replies.
What should I do with what I have? Are the grains too dry and that is killing it? Should I chuck them or wait?

Does that mean you opened the jars before full colonization to smell them?

you could wait but based off how long its been plus the prep i can only assume its trash.
i prep wbs like this..
rinse like crazy/skim off floaters/shit you dont want. soak with hot as fuck water(not boiling) for 24hrs also add gypsum if desired. drain/strain for 20min. do not rinse. load slightly damp grain into jars. pc 2 hrs.
serves me well.. however.. anything that took a long time to colonize needed a dunk before fruiting.

No. I've never opened them. The 12 that are still white are all together and there doesn't seem to be a bad small coming from them. Doesn't smell sweet either.

yeah, that's quite normal. If you have a proper filter, even a jar contaminated to death won't smell if not opened. That's not a sign.
But a long period for full colonization is a sign for contamination.
