Someone related note, anyone had issues with spray bottle of h2o developing mildewing smell from sitting too long? That was also part of what started this thinking. Would hate to think I am spraying my SAB with a mildew solution everytime I do work.
yeah, I noticed this when I was doing foliar feeds for my other hobby, so now for myc and for gardening I dump all my water containers when I'm done using them, squirt them until they're dry if they have a spray nozzle, store them with their openings upside down, and when I reload them I do some test squirts in to my tub (edit: bathroom tub, not monotub) and give the air a whiff. any mildew smell and they get sprayed out until it's gone, emptied and reloaded. maybe overkill but I'm extremely sensitive to mold and mildew so I'm trying to not farm what would truly be a biohazard for me.

Yeah, similar for me. First time I noticed it I stopped, changed it out, and spray the shit out of the SAB. But noticed it returns rather quickly. Which, again, is part of the reason I first started thinking about this. If I can cut out the spritzing all together it simplifies procedure and removes another vector for contams.

I just started using Clorox wipes on the roof and part of the side I look through, I got tired of spraying so much and having things get foggy and water spotted. I do the wipe then a quick air cleaner can spray then have spray bottle of iso on top of the box for hands and stuff. Seems to be working so far.
I just started leaving dishes in there so the condensation would dry out too.

I also pour plates and leave them in there. I spray like once every 40 plates. I do ISO wipe anything I load into it and I'll just give it like 30 seconds to a minute to settle after. Mine's in a somewhat frequented room, door open. We only have one floor, so it definitely gets some currents. Litter box is in there. Cats.
I do keep the holes covered when not in use.
Biggest contam factor: level of durnk. I'm pretty damn sure my own mistakes are the cause of my contamination, not the integrity of the SAB/the room it's in.

Hmm. yeah, I've never sprayed anything in a SAB. I wipe it down with ISO (wet sponge, wring it out, soak with 99% to get a water mixture) and wipe it down inside a half hour before working. If it hasn't been used in a while that is, otherwise just wipe the floor. I want the ISO fumes in the air to capture anything floating and sink it to the floor, where it dies.

I have terrible tap water that gets slimy so I have been using distilled water on my spray bottle.

Dryboxing does not seem to work as well for me.
Lysol wipes leave a nice sticky disinfectant film on everything for shit in the air to stick to. I've also jst totally whore-bathed everthing in side and the walls of the sab with iso and have had that work as well, jst an explosion hazard.
For a while i was doing all kinds od shit cuz i was looking thru the side instead of thru the top, so my breath was flowing into the sab via my armholes.

Dry box and face mask should be plenty effective. If not, either strong breeze or poor technique is afoot, possibly both.

Hey guys, quick question here. I'm just getting into expanding via G2G. Now I'm noticing some difference in colonization time (one jar is ready and the other's aren't yet). Is it a thing to shake at 70pct after G2G or do I leave them alone untill they're ready to go to bulk?

Pic may help For me it depends on how far behind and appearance. You can shake anytime you want. If it looks like the difference in col rate is due to uneven distribution of spawn and the time it would take to catch up is greater than the recovery time from shaking, then I would shake. If the time to catch up is less than recovery, I'll just wait. If it looks like the difference may be due to contams, then I just let it finish on its own and spawn to a separate tub to be safe.
And thank you everyone for your input on SAB procedure.

If i shake anything at 70% or above it's cause i'm not confident in it and want to see how it recovers. You probably just put a tad more grain in some than others. OR you accidentally pooped in one.
my SAB sesh in a nutshell.
Turn off ac, enter room, close door, Iso table, Iso SAB, put on mask and gloves, iso hands and arms up to elbows, Iso everything going in while simultaneously loading SAB, organize things in sab and get to work.

Thanks for the input guys! My guess is it's uneven amounts of spawn per jar due to general clumsyness. I'll shake next time to get all of them to 100pct at the same time.

When you say iso SAB, do you wipe or spray?

When I was in fourth grade my dad came home to a house full of alcohol vapor because I made an air filter that was soaked with isopropyl alcohol and a computer fan to suck air through it. Not only does it kill germs in the air but it kills brain cells. Alcohol fumes can be absorbed through the lungs so make sure you explode with a good grain alcohol lol

Would it be better to keep your arms damp to prevent dander or hair from falling off? Alcohol dries out your skin pretty quickly I would think that would introduce more contaminants

Would you guys be interested in tutorial for a home-built induction heater so you don't have to use a flame torch to sterilize your scalpels during a transfer? I've got all the stuff to make one I'm curious if other people would be interested as well before I do it. They costs over $300 from what I've seen and you can make one for about 30 bucks
