Its not that much work making 100 agar plates and no risk
You do you boo-boo. I think theres probably a reason why absolutely no commercial farms do it like that. Maybe just the higher technical skill required. Many commercial farms canβt even make their own spawn because its too technically difficult and buy in al ltheir grain
Dunno if it really need repeating but I dont fuck with LCβs because Iβm not growing at the scale where they make themselves more practical. But at a certain scale I would. Gfy
Fair play, After doing research i just thought this was the way it was done. I see why people buy spawn in but I wouldnt mind being a spawn supplier.

I've seen some people mention Kaytee Finch blend on here recently and so I was looking at a bag of that and the large bag of WBS that I normally get and just kind of debating. He came over to ask if he can help. I said no just looking, he looked at what I was looking at, and I said something about not wanting as much crack corn or sunflower shells in it because the birds make a mess of it. he said that the large bag is one of the most popular Sellers and most people don't have issues with it. He said he uses it all the time with no issue, and right now they're on sale for 2 20 lb bags for $10. Just his tone and demeanor gave me the impression he was saying more than what he was saying, but it could very well just be my confirmation bias at play. I want it to be an unspoken understanding so my brain makes it an unspoken understanding. I've had my suspicions about Ace hardware for a while though. They have two aisles there that have basically everything except agar. One stop shop for mush cult.

LC is the easiest way to do large scale: it's also the easiest way to fuck up entire harvests with a single fail... boils down to your proficiency: chances are, at those scales, you're fairly proficient! I have had some limited experience with lc, both success and failure... every methodology is going to have pros and cons: gives and takes... what life is about
There are some farms that are all in house: from culture R&D to distribution
Finch blends are cool bc they contain less sunflower seeds and hardly no corn, but economy WBS for $0.25/lb is hard to beat! Ultimately, prepped properly, grain is grain imo
If one is crafty enough, a random stranger's home is a one stop shop for mush cult lmao (Not condoning B&E)

Of those of you who are using metal lids on your jars, do you guys put the lids upside down? I've seen a lot of back and forth throughout the forum about it. I never have, and haven't really noticed any detrimental issues but that doesn't mean it's still the way to go.

Well it's bad luck to put your purse on the ground, but I'll set it down gently and then go about it. Ha

I flip the inside upside down and then I used red RTV to modify them into one piece lids. Drilled a 1/4" hole and rtv'd an sfd over it for gas exchange.

Its just that first sentence. I am jealous of not being by that hardware store though. I was buying coir and tubs at the same time once and I felt like everybody knew. I was high though, whats new.

Lol, well my GF decided to smoke the last of my weed last night and not tell me, so I can't blame it on that. But I am a bit oblivious when it comes to social cues so maybe he was trying to convey disdain at my presence for all I know. Ha

As Randalf said, someone had mentioned commercial mush farms using those. PC them with foil over the top, only open the PC in front of a flowhood once it's cooled off, peel the foil off using correct FH technique and viola. I don't see why a SAB wouldn't work, you just have to be a bit more careful removing it from the PC. Probably easier to use a small PC, i have a 6qt Presto i use for my 250mL media bottles. MUCH quicker than the 23qt!

Washing up liquid is best as this is very sticky and all you want to do is get the spore to stick to that, not kill it. I quick wipe with iso 70% will kill bacteria. Most contamination comes from you so make sure that at the very least your arms and hands are clean. I used to have a routine that left me sitting in front of my Sab slightly wet from the shower I just had in my towel....lol
Man bump all that noise! I've been using a dry SAB, no towel, no showering or scrubbing my arms, i just pour a little iso in my gloved hands and make sure the HVAC is off. ~3.5% contam rate on agar, and i blame it being that high due to using shitty FabLab plates (the lid inner diameter is a fair amount bigger than the bottom outer diameter so it's easy to shift the lid over the bottom and/or fingers to float over media... CANNOT WAIT to get back to my damn Nest plates!).
Hell, i even ran another experiment with the HVAC. Had the HVAC running, which blows down right onto my SAB, had a plate open directly underneath an armhole, timed it open for 5 minutes. Got one satellite colony after a week. SAB's straight up WORK.

It means "good for you."
I have to be ultra aware of air flow/pressure when i SAB. I wipe everything thats not comming in direct contact with mycelium down with lysol wipes which deposit a sticky moistness that lasts. I shed like crazy too apparently so i gotta wear gloves.
A sprits and a quick wipe with iso will not kill a whole lot. It's called rubbing alcohol cuz you gotta rub that shit into whatever you wanna sanitize for 15-30sec in order to aqueous and breach the cell walls of the nasties your trying to kill.
Not being a knw it all, jst blathering.

Word. I agree. Not to say my way is the way, just that before I did all this, my results were not good. As I improved my process of before and during SAB work, my results improved.

Here's those jars that were taking forever to colonize, finally in a tub.
While I was setting it up I noticed some grey stuff in the oats near the bottom of the jar. So there was some contam it seems
I decided to pick out what I could and carry on just to see what would happen.
Seems like they might pull through!

I would keep an eye on that bottom right area. Here's hoping though. You have nothing to lose by trying.
